This season is not going well at all and episode 4 shows the struggles and the crippling attitude that’s stopping the success.
This recap of Netflix series Last Chance U season 5, episode 4, “Greyhaven” contains significant spoilers.
How does Last Chance U season 5, episode 4, “Greyhaven” open?
RJ Sterner (Wide Receiver) talks about about his parents who split and how he lives with his Aunt. He explains how many white people are rich in his neighbourhood but his family is not in that criteria. RJ Sterner’s family has many writers in its history — he’s also good at drawing. With his unstable upbringing, football is like family to him. Last Chance U brings another story bringing the importance of football in family and how it can shape lives.
On the bus
At the start of the episode, the players try to learn the Haka. Coach John Beam tells them all that he is responsible for all of them; after and before the game they should be on the bus. He’s cut some players as punishment for not being on the bus. Beam is concerned that the next few games are the hardest part of their schedule. You can sense he’s panicking about their title defense already and I am not surprised.
Cutting out the bullsh*t
Dior thinks his recruitment may be hurt by playing quarterback due to what Jared told him. Beam tells him that is bullsh*t. In a meeting, Beam calls out RJ on his speed on the sideline and that he needs to fix his movement or don’t play. RJ tells the audience that he struggles with Beam as he’s overlooked and feels he is the best wide receiver. It’s all good RJ saying this though — you have to walk the walk.
History of abuse
Last Chance U season 5, episode 4, “Greyhaven” sees RJ talk about missed Christmases and lack of parenting; his father was absent and abusive and either though his mother tried taking caring of him, she suffered from mental illnesses herself — his mother was sexually abused by her father when younger and his grandfather was a pedophile. Admirably, RJ Stern accepts his past and tackles the complexities in his family but this is a very abusive and dysfunctional family that’s difficult to hear.
Plagiarism and ambition
In a class, Nu’u is called out by Coach Beam for not showing up for all classes and also plagiarising. He’s been found out and he is panicking. Beam wonders if Nu’u wants to be a good football player or if he wants to be a good father and husband — he asks if Nu’u would take a scholarship or if he’d stay here with his family. Beam highlights that there is nothing wrong with that. But can he not do both? Be a good father, husband, and a good football player? I felt the narrative was strange here.
How does Last Chance U season 5, episode 4, “Greyhaven” end?
One day before training and Coach Beam is in a bad mood and focuses his attention on RJ. The wide receiver is struggling with Beam’s heckling. The coach thinks this was the worst practice ever. It’s game day — Laney College versus Butte College. At half time Laney College is down. Beam tells the suspended players that they don’t know how to be “f*cking men”. The defense plays well but Dior is struggling and Beam gives him words of assurance. RJ Sterner is angry that he’s not getting the ball. After the game, Dior needs to throw up and RJ Sterner is distraught. This season is not going well at all and episode 4 shows the struggles and the crippling attitude that’s stopping the success.
