How does Last Chance U season 5, episode 5, “The City” open?
Episode 5 opens up with Rejzohn heading to the barbers. He reminisces about his father who has passed — he states he was a great man and kept him at a high standard — he wanted the best for his children. As Rejzohn got older, they started seeing their father’s time less but he turned up to the games and things got better. Rejzohn’s father tried to break up a fight at a club and he was shot twice. What a sad start to the episode.
Town Vs city
Quarterback Ryan has had a good rehab and he’s back in training, which means Dior can go back to wide. Their next game is San Francisco City — they are a big rival — it’s like town versus city. This is big, folks, and the chapter gears up for the moment.
Bad practice again
In practice, things are still not going well. It’s almost like there’s no motivation to win. Coach Beam sits down with RJ Sterner about him running wide and tells him to figure it out — “You’re a way better player than this”. RJ Sterner believes that Coach Beam is a good man but he keeps making him quit. I believe it is the other way around — Coach Beam is trying to make RJ Sterner into a better player.
Coach Beam thinks that society now wants instant gratification but he doesn’t think values change. You get the sense in this interview that the coach is a little exhausted with the new world where young adults have forgotten how to earn it — he’s tired of self-entitlement. Meanwhile, the coaches argue whether or not they are playing badly due to self-entitlement. It feels like it is a factor in season 5, but there is a quality issue as well.
How does Last Chance U season 5, episode 5, “The City” end?
It’s game day and it’s a big game! The players are pumped for the intense rivalry — Rams versus Eagles. At half time it’s 0-0 and both teams are battling hard and Beam is pumped. In the fourth quarter it’s 10-10 and Rejzohn is injured and in a lot of pain — he’s scared and Beam hugs him. Laney College wins 13-10 and there’s elation everywhere on the field. What is noticeable is that the team dug deep. Episode 5 sees a potential turning point for the team as big rivals enter the town which consumes everyone’s week.
