One of the main highlights in the second season of The Umbrella Academy is that it freshens up the roster with some new characters that feel impactful to the story. Very early on in Season 2, Diego becomes fascinated by a patient in a psychiatric hospital in the 60s who appears to have taken a strong liking to the Umbrella Academy member. In fact, Lila helped Diego escape the hospital. So, who is Lila in The Umbrella Academy season 2?

She can sure fight…

That’s what was striking about Lila in the first few episodes; her mixed martial arts skills are as good as any other character in the series and she was the main reason Diego was able to leave the hospital in the first place.

But where is she from?

We learn that Lila is actually working for The Handler who is trying to put things straight after been demoted by The Commission for the mess caused in Season 1. The Handler ordered the killing of Lila’s parents when she was a child and then recruited her as an assassin. This is all unbeknown to Diego of course who is very stuck on preventing the assassination of President Kennedy.

So Lila is not a mental patient?

No, she was planted by The Handler to infiltrate The Umbrella Academy but while on the mission, she gathers feelings for Diego.

So is Lily one of the bad guys?

It’s complicated because Lila is a very likable character. And, she has a soft spot and an on-going romance with Diego so again, it’s complicated. You can understand why she ended up under the wing of The Handler — her behaviors are circumstantial and based on The Handler’s manipulations.

So we should support Lila?

I think for now, yes — Lila is slick, cool, and is able to take on a group of enemies at once. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. Coupled with her personality and her on and off love with Diego, she’s definitely a character we should keep an eye out for in subsequent seasons.
