Netflix short film John Was Trying to Contact Aliens will be released on the platform on August 20, 2020.

As I venture into my 30s, it’s become flagrantly apparent that one of the main drivers of the human race is purpose. Living is not enough. We need to feel a transfer of energy every day in order to feel we have some kind of measured value. Netflix’s John Was Trying to Contact Aliens canvasses that idea which results into a sweet perspective.

As the title suggests, the subject matter did try to contact aliens. He made it his life mission; an adopted child who lives with his grandparents spent every single day building technology in the house, taking up all the space and sending music in outer space with the hope an alien life force would pick it up and send a signal back — John’s reason for using music is because it’s a universal language. It’s way more romantic than it sounds.

The Netflix short film celebrates such dedication; a man that not only has brilliant taste in music but the brains and patience to build something that could very well still provide that moment of glory. John Was Trying to Contact Aliens uses a range of archival footage to quickly frame the man’s life, giving the audience a sense of what he built, encouraging his loving grandparents to expand the house so he can build grander communication technology.

But in the midst of John Was Trying to Contact Aliens there is a reference to the man’s personal life; how he felt strange being gay in a rural community that was less understanding. The short film quickly changes its message where John’s purpose to find alien life resulted in a greater meaning.

The documentary has a sweet heartwarming message; that often being in search of something provides a greater meaning in life. John’s yearning for alien contact is the prologue in finding a deeper meaning in something else. And that’s what makes John Was Trying to Contact Aliens beautiful. We can have all the science in the world and a discovery that changes perspective for a lifetime but it’s what resonates within us and the unparalleled, raw meaning that matters the most.

The real message is perspective and meaning. This is a truly important short documentary.
