There are hangovers, and then there’s what everyone is experiencing in “Dawn of a New Century”, which I think qualifies as something else entirely. I’ve had some big nights out to recover from, but thankfully I’ve never had to contend with bags full of rats being dropped off on the premises, which is how this penultimate episode opens. It seems it’s Maria who’s responsible for this, as she continues to scheme. At least Prank visits Glogauer to call off the hit on her, though, which was ill-advised in the first place.
Things are looking especially bad for Colina in “Dawn of a New Century”, as her husband Rupp sets about making her life – and that of their son – extremely miserable. Not that things are looking good for Prank either, but then again when are they ever? Stifter visits Urban to propose a potential alliance that’ll oust Prank from the next Oktoberfest, and even Glogauer has no loyalties to his taskmaster.
This is to say nothing of Ludwig, who somehow comes off worse than everyone. First, him having sex with Franz is broadcast very publicly, leading to outrage and utter humiliation for him. But when he confronts Franz about it, eventually socking him in the mouth, he falls out of a window and dies. This is an unexpected and tragic development that just might be what tips Maria over the edge. We certainly begin to see this in “Dawn of a New Century”.
At least Roman finally gets his hands on Prank, beating him to the ground in the street. This is easily the lowest we’ve seen all of these characters. Prank and Maria even find themselves forming a tentative and uneasy alliance, spurred on mostly by Clara and Roman’s relationship, but there’s so much delirium in the air that you can’t imagine anything is going to go well for anyone in the finale.
