I must admit that as much as I enjoyed the first season of CBS’s The Unicorn, the thought of a second season hadn’t necessarily crossed my mind. Nevertheless, here we are, continuing on very directly from the somewhat cliffhanger ending of last season’s finale with Wade, Forrest, and Ben attempting to track down Natalie Zea’s mystery hottie by interrogating veterinarians while insisting none of this is as creepy as it looks.

Things aren’t all that simple at home, either. Natalie believes she’s old enough to get her ears pierced — but not to restain the fence — and Forrest, newly employed, has taken to standing at all times while Delia pretends to fawn over his significantly more aligned posture. Grace’s boyfriend is away for six weeks, and Michelle’s going to college. I think that just about brings us up to speed.

Wade hits on a new idea to track Natalie Zea’s car, sketching out her bumper sticker for guidance at a restaurant where the woman he’s looking for — her name is Shannon — is working. They miss each other by seconds and inches, though, and we cut to a month later, with Wade’s search evidently remaining fruitless, but at least Natalie has had her ears pierced.

It’s Delia, of all people, who hits on the next lead in The Unicorn season 2, episode 1 — a kid wearing a logo for Mt. Hope elementary school that matches Wade’s demented sketches. But everyone decides that it probably isn’t healthy to feed Wade’s obsession. Grace has gotten over her romantic woes much more easily — now he’s back, it turns out she isn’t all that interested in her boyfriend after all. For Wade, things aren’t that straightforward, especially when Forrest tells him that Delia figured out the logo.

Wade naturally makes himself look like a criminal turning up at Mt. Hope alone and without kids, and not doing a particularly good job of explaining his presence. Of course, he sees Shannon turn up, with her kids and their father, which quickly puts him off his quest. She recognizes him, though, and seems very happy to see him, but he’s forced to make a sharpish escape when he sees security rounding on him. He’s done listening to his heart.

Except he isn’t, since Shannon turns up on his doorstep, having Googled the company address on the side of his truck. As it turns out, her husband is her ex-husband. And she’s been thinking about Wade too! Their introduction is typically awkward, but the chemistry is off the charts immediately. Should be fun to see where this goes.
