Summary
“Mega-Lo-Memories: Part Deux” is another Black Friday episode that doesn’t amount to much, but it does build to a pretty sweet payoff all the same.
It’s a Black Friday episode! We have to have one of those, don’t we? “Mega-Lo-Memories: Part Deux” is also a sequel of sorts to “Mega-Lo-Memories”, a similar episode from last year that was also about swapping stories of Black Friday adventures while waiting in line for Black Friday sales. That’s the gimmick here too, with Violet frustratedly pointing out the similarities.
It’s Wayne who takes the limelight with a story of his heroic dairy deliveries after a truck malfunction. But he has stiff competition from the usual suspects, including Betty’s reminiscences of Black Fridays past. It probably says a lot about Greenpoint that queuing up outside the Mega-Lo-Mart every year is a highlight worth recalling.
All this means that the bulk of Bless the Harts season 2, episode 7 is spent in hazy flashbacks or exaggerated asides, with the vast majority of the gags at the expense of typical Black Friday behavior, which continues to surprise in its predictability every year. The mall Halloween episode earlier in the season was better at shining a light on the past lives of these characters, I think, although this one works on the same terms, and in some of the same ways. Wayne fighting for attention with his outlandish tales of heroism and being largely relegated in favor of store-set reminiscences feels in a lot of ways like the show’s attitude to being about real-ish people with real-ish problems in microcosm.
Ultimately, though, there’s not much to it, which I suppose is the consequence of basing an entire episode around capitalism’s sabbath. But there’s undoubtedly something to be said about what Black Friday actually means to people very much like the residents of Greenpoint. And it does amount to a pretty sweet payoff tying Wayne and Jenny’s stories together.
