Netflix documentary film Giving Voice was released on the streaming service on December 11, 2020.

“August gave his life for these papers”. That’s a statement that’s repeated several times in Netflix’s Giving Voice. The documentary wants the audience to understand that the young people who appear in this feature are walking on sacred ground; it wants the audience to understand that August Wilson is giving young actors a chance. This documentary isn’t just insight — it’s a declaration of legacy. A reminder that August Wilson is very much alive in spirit and soul.

There’s this notion that August brings people alive; encouraging those who do not even want to be artists to be artists. There’s real strength in this documentary as it truly reflects a life’s work but also intrinsically links it to our future — the past has birthed our future.

Giving Voice is not all about the American Playwright, though his talent to listen to those who were not heard is integral to the messaging. The documentary feature shows actors taking part in the August Wilson Monologue Competition, which is triggered on a regional and national level in America. The winners get a chance to take part in an August Wilson play.

There’s plenty of magnificent talent at play in Giving Voice. We are presented with student actors who all have varying reasons for what they do, and their obvious talent justifies their flight to the prestigious competition. The Netflix film does have a stillness present in some moments. Some monologues consume you; every etch on their face is an emotion, a message, a potential opportunity.

Giving Voice not only represents the late famous playwright, but it also shows how his legacy has created a future for many.
