This recap of B Positive season 1, episode 5, “High Risk Factor”, contains spoilers. You can check out our thoughts on the previous episode by clicking these words.

One of the on-going storylines of B Positive — in fact, probably the main one — is whether or not Gina can live responsibly enough to actually be a kidney donor. That was Drew’s worry in the first place and it’s absolutely his worry in “High Risk Factor” since despite moving her in and doing his best to keep an eye on her, Gina just won’t do exactly what he says. But isn’t he being unreasonable to think she should?

A good recurring gag in this show is Gina’s wacky start-up business ideas, and I like that they almost all get a payoff or a callback rather than just being left alone as an isolated gag. So when she rescues a cat and names him Bolognese, she also introduces him to Cannoli, the giant dog that continues to just chill in Drew’s house. It makes the jokes funnier but it also helps to rationalize Drew’s anxiety. He’s not just worried about the state of his kidney, but also the state of his home.

His solution to all this is to install a tracking app on Gina’s phone so that he can monitor where she is at all times. The idea is that at least then he’ll know if she’s doing something dangerous and irresponsible, but he uses it more as an excuse to follow her every move and incessantly call her with questions on her whereabouts and activities. Understandably, this drives Gina nuts.

Wondering why Drew is like this, she turns to Julia, who explains his control issues probably stem from his relationship with his parents. Even Maddie recognizes the issues and cautions Drew against what he’s doing, and both his dialysis group and Gina’s residents give him an earful. But the situation only becomes peskier when Gina decides to do skydiving. Julia warns him not to go down what she calls “the Drew Hole” and defends Gina, but in private she’s quick to call Gina and berate her for choosing now to tick this item off her bucket list. But maybe that’s just a knock-on effect of being married to Drew. Maybe what Julia needs is a more adventurous life like Gina’s, which is probably why she decides to skydive with her. And she takes the cat home, too.

Still, at least Bolognese is out of Drew’s house now.
