While Equinox is ostensibly about what happened to Ida, the third episode makes it clear that the flashbacks are also in service of fleshing out Astrid, too. As a child, she was beset by nightmarish visions, claims of monsters, and periodic trips, presumably imagined, to an ethereal orange-tinted woodland. It’s enough to make her parents worry and debate the involvement of a psychologist.

The past also reveals more of Ida and Jakob’s sort-of relationship – an important dynamic considering it was Jakob who contacted Astrid in the present-day and who, in the flashbacks, largely leads the gang on their road trip to the mysterious island, shepherded by Jakob’s odd book and several ominous dice rolls.

You can’t have this kind of mystery without some hypnotism, which is the direction Astrid goes in courtesy of Lene’s friend Jutta, handheld through the weird orange wood full of ominous silhouettes – the trance-like state is enough to annoy Dennis and to convince Lene that Astrid has seen her still-living sister.

And of course, Equinox episode 3 reveals there’s a symbol! From the gravestones glimpsed earlier, Astrid deciphers the rune as a pagan symbol representing the circularity of life, with the Spring Equinox as a vital juncture in the process, a date so significant that children born on it can possess superpowers and such. Very typical business, it must be said, and an island cult only completes the picture. If someone has disappeared, and there’s a cult nearby, how much of a mystery is there, really?

Well, apparently enough of one to lead Astrid to Henrik, finally, who predictably denies all involvement. His being tight-lipped only leaves Astrid with more questions, but in fairness, he prompts her to ask them – just the right ones, ideally. Complicating matters further, her return to the bus yields a package with instructions for a meeting and a tape player loaded with familiar, obviously significant music.

“What Is It You See When You’re Asleep?” closes in the past, with Ida being presented an egg, as we’re informed about Ostara, who has apparently returned. Is the obvious conclusion here that Ida was sacrificed by the cult? Or is there more to it?
