The pieces begin to come together in “I Hear Voices”, the penultimate episode, but some mysteries remain elusive.

The penultimate episode of Equinox takes Astrid to Marrakech, following the address of Jakob’s letter, and unites her with Amelia, who seems to be having a much better time of things than everyone else is. Now going by Cybele, a change of identity that one assumes requires a bit more than a deed poll, Amelia is deliberately enigmatic about the cult, Jakob, Ostara, a foreboding blue door, and basically everything, though she does encourage Astrid to watch the sunset at the top of a wooden tower.
Whispers and screams form the soundtrack of “I Hear Voices”, proving the title of this episode a fitting one. Amelia screams in the night. Incoherent whispers emanate from strange rooms behind ominous doors. In the mirror, Astrid sees her younger self and is so disturbed by the reflection that she headbutts the glass and discovers Jakob’s book behind it.
This is enough evidence to demand answers from Amelia, who confirms the book’s soothsaying properties, which isn’t new information. A bit more solid is the fact that the Equinox repeats itself every 21 years and is due to begin again, Ostara runs in the blood – and is Ida, as established – and that Astrid’s mother has more answers.
The idea of wavering mental stability has been toyed with all throughout the season and reaches a crescendo in Equinox episode 5, when David attempts to drive Astrid to a psychiatric facility, resulting in a severe swerve of the car. I think that means no.
The past sequences in “I Hear Voices” also feature a lot of… well, voices, heard by both Astrid, convinced not to take her pills by a young boy who befriends her, and Ida, who is beset by whispers and visions in the aftermath of the ritual. Nothing is the same for her in its aftermath, even school and her relationship with her so-called friends, none of whom seem to want anything to do with her. Her physical condition also worsens, though for a different reason – she’s pregnant, which Lene deduces. She wants to take her to Marrakech.
Things aren’t going well for Ida, all told. When she returns to school she discovers Jakob and Amelia having sex, which is a blow, and you can just tell that Henrik doesn’t have the best of intentions – and that’s before Ida discovers a very familiar mask in his bathroom. Baby daddy? Yikes.
