This recap of Mr Mayor season 1, episode 3, “Brentwood Trash”, contains spoilers. Our spoiler-free review is here.

One man’s trash is another man’s treasure, or so the saying goes, and that’s what residents of Brentwood would like people to believe. If Andie MacDowell wants to throw out food within its expiry date and clothes with the tags still on and skincare products she doesn’t need, well, why shouldn’t she, especially if someone less perfect can benefit from it? As long as the trash doesn’t stay in Brentwood, what’s the problem?

It’s a problem for Neil in “Brentwood Trash”, anyway, since he has to argue against his fellow one-percenters that a trash facility is going to be opened in the area. Arpi knows he’ll cave to the upper-class pressure so insists on accompanying him, which turns out to be just as well when Andie’s hair, which apparently just dries like that, sends Neil into a tailspin. Brentwood is also summarized by cameo appearances from Chrissy Teigen and David Spade, which is about what you’d expect, really. Arpi has to save the day by manipulating Andie MacDowell into revealing how much of a superficial monster she is.

With this being the A-plot, Mr Mayor episode 3 confines the B and C strands to the mayor’s office, which is obviously sans mayor. In one, Mikaela tries to cosy up to Orly, who is predictably annoyed about high school injustice, only to discover that high school never really ends — it just bleeds into real, ostensibly grown-up life. As if to prove the point, Jaden spend the entirety of “Brentwood Trash” trying to hire a speechwriter for Neil, getting his hopes up for a fellow nerd who speaks Dothraki and eventually having to settle on a much better, more qualified candidate. Oh, and Tommy has a zit.

Mr Mayor season 1, episode 3 is funny enough, even if it’s swimming in shallow waters. A more daring outing would be nice.
