Summary

Gina has a psych evaluation coming in “Open Heart Surgery”, but it quickly becomes clear that between her and Drew, she might not be the unstable one.

This recap of B Positive season 1, episode 6, “Open Heart Surgery”, contains spoilers.

All throughout this first season, B Positive — which hasn’t aired since December — has put Gina across as, in her own words, a “nutty b*tch”. But that’s the clever twist of “Open Heart Surgery”, in which she’s scheduled for a psych evaluation that Drew is super worried she won’t be able to pass. She has to be mentally sound to be a donor, and the discovery that one of her exes, Darren, has moved on with a beautiful new woman, threatens to send her spiraling.

Naturally, Drew is fretting, but that seems to be his natural state. Opinions among his dialysis group are mixed, but Gideon, still the best and most underused character, recommends that he uses his connections as a therapist to get a copy of the evaluation and coach Gina through it. It’s unethical, obviously, but needs must, especially since she’s visibly and increasingly upset about Darren and only has her artisanal beer to focus on, which she plans to export to Germany (without a license.)

But the neat subversion of expectations is that Gina is more than capable of passing the test, even in spite of her current emotional predicament. When Drew quizzes her on a couple of the questions, she gives perfect answers, but he still isn’t convinced. When they go for the evaluation and she starts freaking out in the waiting room after seeing that Darren has romantically proposed, he refuses to let her undergo the evaluation without his interference, despite the fact she steels herself for it and is doing perfectly well before his head dopily (and obviously) appears at the window.

B Positive season 1, episode 6 is, obviously, building towards a frank conversation between Drew and Gina in which we get some more of her backstory and learn that it was her who pushed Darren away out of fear that she couldn’t remain faithful while he was on tour as a musician. It’s telling of how Gina tends to reframe things that happen to her in ways that absolve her of responsibility, and it’s also good for Drew and Gina’s bond since she assumes he’s just using her for her kidney and doesn’t actually care about her, which was probably true, to begin with, but increasingly isn’t the case.

But what I like most about “Open Heart Surgery” is Norma, one of the older women who Gina ferries around for work. She’s a great character, and her relationship with Gina does a lot for the latter’s characterization too. The episode ends with Norma watching Gina and Drew’s new advert for her beer, enjoying (well, sort of) a bottle. We really could do with more Norma. So too, probably, could Gina. I hope we both get what we want.
