This recap of Netflix K-Drama series Lovestruck in the City episode 12 contains significant spoilers.

After the last chapter that brought Lee Eun-o and Jae-won’s worlds together, this episode was always going to be an eye-opener. It brings further context to Lee Eun-o’s life, and how she landed here, pushing someone she loves away.

The rooftop camping continues, and Choi Kyeong-jun accuses Jae-won of being an alcoholic and doesn’t want him to drink. They all make a toast for “friends”. The group continue asking Jae-won about the “camera thief” and how he throw away the ring — this is super awkward. Jae-won asks Lee Eun-o what she thinks about his situation, and she blurts that he seems content spreading stories about his love life. Jae-won trades words back, stating she likes to keep secrets. He gets frustrated, and Sun Rin-i believes Jae-won has anger issues. If there were one intuitive character in this scene, one of the friends would have sensed something was not quite right here.

It gets too awkward for Lee Eun-o

And the super-awkwardness turns to intense-awkwardness. Choi Kyeong-jun asks about Lee Eun-o’s necklace, and she gets defensive and says she has a private life before walking off. In the bathroom, Lee Eun-o wonders how Jae-won knew where she lived. He approaches her inside the apartment and shows her marketing portfolio — the reason why he ended up at their roof party. She tells him she can’t work with him and asks him to leave, but Jae-won wants her to at least explain everything. He tells her that Yoon Seon-a wasn’t like this and that she would have shown honesty, which clearly hurts her. He makes it worse by calling her a liar and a coward before leaving. Lee Eun-o sobs to herself, alone with her feelings again.

Everything feels like its back to square one every time the pair meet — it’s like one of them needs to break their guard, and accept there is more to this than just petty feelings.

Lee Eun-o decides to leave her apartment

Everyone else leaves the roof camping, leaving Geon alone with Lee Eun-o who is downbeat and starts drinking heavily. In the middle of the night, Lee Eun-o packs her suitcase and leaves. She bumps into a very drunk Oh Seon-yeong, who is on her way to see Geon, and is acting her usual crazy but cool self. She is way too hammered, so Lee Eun-o walks off.

The downfall of Lee Eun-o

Lovestruck in the City episode 12 then brings the audience down a tragic memory lane of Lee Eun-o’s life. Flashbacks show Lee Eun-o returning home to her partner, and she finds him with another woman. This shocked her to the core. Her partner told her that she must have known that he had fallen out of love. The next day, to make matters worse, Lee Eun-o lost out on a job to a woman named Yoon Seon-a. She was called “too ordinary”—another confidence-knocker. Lee Eun-o got on a bus with her life in tatters, which led her to Jae-won on the beach. She started a new life where she could be whoever she wanted to be and didn’t want to be “ordinary” anymore.

Lee Eun-o ate at a cafe on the beachside and loved the food instantly — she hadn’t eaten much for a week. As she cries, the cafe owners get her tissues.

The ending

When Lee Eun-o stops crying, she asks if she can work part-time at the café. They ask for her name, and she doesn’t want to tell them. The owners tell her she can have any name she wants. She picks the name Yoon Seon-a, the casual interviewer who got her job, who represented herself accurately — the real Yoon Seon-a even danced in front of the interviewers. Lee Eun-o is being symbolic by picking that name — she clearly felt that being “ordinary” brought her to the personal tragedies.

Back in the present day, Lee Eun-o doesn’t know where she is and wakes up frantically. She opens up the bedroom door slowly, and she can see Jae-won making breakfast. She’s in his apartment. Drinking can do that to you.
