Summary

Wade decides it’s time for Shannon to spend the night in “Overnight Sensation”, leading to a slew of problems. But are most of them imagined?

This recap of The Unicorn season 2, episode 6, “Overnight Sensation”, contains spoilers.

Following on from the tremendously awkward getting-to-know-you dinner from last week’s episode, Wade and Shannon are getting on better than ever — not that Shannon’s live-in ex-husband makes that particularly easy. And then there’s the kid. Either way, it’s not easy to maintain an exciting, sexy relationship under these circumstances, hence “Overnight Sensation.”

Wade wants Shannon to spend the night but doesn’t want to put Natalie and Grace in that position, which he shares with the widows’ group. But they think he should go through with it anyway, with some safety precautions — most of them noise related. But it’s probably time, since Shannon just chills with everyone now, having barbecues and such, even if Delia thinks she hates her. You know how Delia is.

Nevertheless, Forrest and Delia both agree that Wade should have Shannon spend the night, but that he should include Natalie and Grace in the process. Somewhat unsurprisingly, they’re both totally okay with it — just so long as Wade finishes his homework and it’s not on a school night.

In the B-plot of The Unicorn season 2, episode 6, Ben gets jealous of Kevin (Jude Carl Vincent), one of Michelle’s economics classmates, and in typical Michelle fashion, she gets annoyed at the accusation. Forrest and Wade aren’t much help either. Then again, Forrest isn’t much help with anything, let alone anything to do with Delia, who rather desperately turns up unannounced on Shannon’s doorstep with a gifted patio heater and then claims credit for helping Natalie and Grace through “their issues”, which as we know they don’t actually have — at all.

As it turns out, Ben was right about Kevin, who later hits on Michelle, but she doesn’t want to give him the satisfaction of proving he was correct in his assumptions. When she eventually does, well… let’s just say it goes alright for Ben.

As it also turns out, Shannon spends the night. And it goes well! Until Shannon goes downstairs the next morning in Wade’s shirt and nothing else and locks eyes with Natalie, which prompts something of a meltdown since “they know that I did sex with their dad!”. Her reconciliatory pancake-making efforts are also undermined somewhat by Grace and Natalie bringing up their mom at every opportunity, though it’s difficult to tell one way or the other whether they’re doing it on purpose or it just is genuinely weird for another woman to be knocking around in their kitchen.

The issue, it turns out in The Unicorn season 2, episode 6, isn’t Shannon staying the night — it’s breakfast, and Shannon being in mom’s kitchen doing mom stuff. It’s a lovely scene between Wade and the girls, this, and a fine example of why this is probably, on balance, the best sitcom airing right now. It ends on a sweet note, and Shannon and Delia finally become best friends like in Step Brothers. All’s well that ends well, I guess, at least until next week.
