“Do Not Resuscitate” throws some serious obstacles Ryan’s way, Mary makes a confession, and Alice and Ocean continue to figure out their shared past.

This recap of Batwoman season 2, episode 6, “Do Not Resuscitate”, contains spoilers.

There are three major story strands in “Do Not Resuscitate”, all of them continuations of the last few weeks of development. If there’s a “case of the week”, so to speak, it involves Mary and Jacob being kidnapped by an unhinged patient who is rather insistent about wanting data about the Desert Rose serum, but even that is important mostly in how it furthers Mary and Jacob’s relationship, including the former confessing about the existence of her underground clinic. Another daughter’s secret life he had no idea of – who would have thought it?

Ryan doesn’t have a good outing this week either. For one thing, her Kryptonite injury is getting worse and causing her all manner of problems out in the field, but again, it’s mostly an excuse to further her relationship with Angelique, who is flush with money and purpose because she’s dealing drugs. Neither of these character-based subplots has a happy ending, really. After bonding with her father over her secret truth and purpose, Mary is devastated that the first thing Jacob wants to do is shut the whole operation down; she preferred it when he did not notice she existed, she says, which is quite a claim. And Angelique, shocked to find her phone bugged by Sophie and considering Ryan a snitch, breaks off their relationship. There’s clearly lingering resentment there of Ryan being dealt a positive hand, for once, and then trying to preach to her from her position of (relative) privilege about how she chooses to get by. Sophie has to listen to the whole exchange, only compounding the guilt she already feels about her involvement.

Ryan’s injury has a number of narrative uses in “Do Not Resuscitate”. For one thing, it helps to position Coryana as the shared long-term goal of everyone, since Ryan will die without the Desert Rose, but it also leads to something of a breakthrough between her and Luke. At first, she tries to keep it from him and is later unable to, but he supports her going out to save Mary anyway, even imbibing the suit with a shot of adrenaline to help out. He’s beginning to understand and accept what the mantle of Batwoman means to Ryan.

And then there’s Alice and Ocean. In Batwoman season 2, episode 6, following on directly from last week’s episode, they work together to try and uncover their shared history, which through both conversations and sexy fighting they discover was a) romantic and b) probably involved them both trying to steal a Desert Rose and being exiled for it. Most of their memories were left intact, but the ones they shared were removed. Ocean’s map to Coryana makes its way to Sophie and then into the wrong hands, so we won’t be heading there just yet, but having a clear goal certainly helps the season to take shape. The ending finds Alice duplicating Ocean’s very handsome face onto a random cadaver so that she can feign having assassinated him to get Kate back – a plot almost certain not to work, but it might be fun to watch her try and pull it off next week.
