John Constantine In New HBO Max Show?

I enjoyed the Hellblazer TV show with Matt Ryan. If you haven’t watched it, then shame on you, but for me, Ryan was by far a more convincing Constantine than Keanu, and the fact the series tried hard to use concepts from the first series of the comic book led me to be more invested in it than I would have been if they just stuck him in the CW, which they eventually did anyway.

So there are rumors that John may be returning, and HBO Max seems to be at the main players here, and that gives me a little hope as they are used to producing more mature fare on their service.

There is a part of me that wonders if this project is going to form the basis of a Justice League Dark franchise though. Constantine was at the heart of JLD in the comic books, along with other supernatural heroes from DC including Doctor Fate and Zatanna.

Let’s face it, Marvel has already done this with Defenders. They launched Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist as individual series, then put them all together for The Defenders. Oddly this idea confused me. I always thought The Defenders were Doctor Strange, Hulk, Namor, and Silver Surfer; eventually, Valkyrie, Nighthawk, and other B-list heroes would join, but the team on TV never matched my comic book sensibilities, and it was pretty poor to be fair too, but the premise followed the Marvel movie blueprint, and it seems an obvious path for DC now, especially after the Crisis event in the CW.

An animated version of the book also had success for DC in 2017, who may have used that project as a test for bigger things.

So bring on John and his scary friends, and start looking for those key issues from the past.

John appeared for the first time in Swamp Thing #37, but that book is already through the roof in high grade, but there may be room for spec elsewhere. (Incidentally, some would argue that there was a panel in a previous issue that John appears in, but it seems CGC say no to that one). The team would appear, but not be named as such, in another Alan Moore-penned issue of Swamp Thing, the double-sized issue #50. This could be a great investment if this project takes off, and you can find cheap issues on eBay as we speak. Another sure thing is of course the first issue of Justice League Dark from DC by Pete Milligan. You can grab a nice copy just now and store it flat, in a bag and a board, and get it ready to sell before the TV show drops. As far as the other characters go, you will be hard-pressed to find first appearances of Zatanna or Doctor Fate, as they are already super hot books and will set you back a pretty penny. Zatanna first shows up in Hawkman #4, and apart from being hard to find, they already cost around £400 in mid-grade, however, if you see a nice copy of DC Superstars #11 featuring that character, definitely grab that book now and hope for the best.
