This recap of Sky Rojo season 1, episode 5, “The Escape”, contains spoilers.

Sky Rojo episode 5 is light on plot progression but heavy on suspense. Most of it is various characters being held at gunpoint in the same location, but this is a clear advantage of shorter episode runtimes. In “The Escape”, Alex Pina can spare a full episode that goes virtually nowhere, geographically, but builds tension expertly and has clear dramatic rhythms, as well as its fair share of backstory and context. It’s very solid television writing.

The opening narration of “The Escape” is quite literally about escapes; Gina’s was staring at the ceiling while overweight men penetrated her, Coral’s was drugs. And so on, and so forth. In the present day, following on from abandoning Wendy in the previous episode, both of those women are undecided about what to do next. Gina is still adamant about protecting her family, but can they really sacrifice Wendy to do that?

Speaking of Wendy, she’s still on the run. Moises and Christian pursue her into a building, where the proprietor holds them both at gunpoint and Wendy remains hidden. Gina and Coral, meanwhile, return to the road and find the mess left behind, all of which is interspersed with flashbacks of Romeo running the brothel with both an iron fist and a sense of grandiosity. He clearly never envisaged a scenario like this, with his girls getting the upper hand.

Christian and Moi pretend to be undercover cops in Sky Rojo episode 5, but their captor isn’t buying it and fires a warning shot that alerts Gina and Coral. Wendy makes herself known, too, grabbing the gun and explaining to the man who she is. She pretends to call the cops but really calls the girls and tells them where she is. When she meets them outside she punches Coral, and the two of them fight. Here, in flashback, we see how Coral was idealistic about her relationship with Moises, and it was Wendy who set her straight, kept her realistic. Coral also told Wendy that she chose to be at the brothel, which is a new wrinkle. After the fight, Coral takes the gun and heads inside, demanding the code to Romeo’s safe on the threat of killing the brothers’ mom. Christian gives up the information. Mom is off-limits, after all.

Outside, though, the car is stuck in the mud and the girls can’t get it going without the keys, so Coral once again heads inside with the gun. She also manages to wrest some power back from Moises in their relationship, which has to count for something. After she leaves, Moises explains to their captor, who obviously regards them both as sex trafficking criminals, that the families of the girls they turn out as hookers are thankful for it. They’re all starving, and can only afford to eat because of the money that is sent home to them from the brothel. Good and bad, he says, are all relative when you look at things that way. Without warning, he snatches the shotgun.

Sky Rojo season 1, episode 5 ends with the girls all back together and back on the road. Coral explains she was hiding out at the club because she killed someone, so this is pretty much her life now. They’re all in it together. A fist bump later, and it’s to the next destination, presumably the club to retrieve their passports. But Moi and Christian can’t be far behind.
