The Wedding Coach manages to represent the average couple that gets married — Jamie Lee brings a refreshing truth.

Hosted by comedian and author Jamie Lee, the Netflix reality series The Wedding Coach season 1 was released on the streaming service on April 7, 2021.

What I’ve always found off-putting about getting married is the wedding itself. I know that will come with many rolling eyes, but the thought of allowing one day to consume your entire being and reducing your relationship to 12 months of wedding plans sounds obstructive rather than constructive. Before the pandemic, I saw a friend of mine throw himself at a wedding with his partner; this involved a measure of stress and unnecessary debt to get to that single day. It almost felt like it was a formality rather than a presentation of love. While I know they truly love each other, I wasn’t sensing any fun in the lead-up to the wedding.

Comedian Jamie Lee had similar experiences; as a former bride, she planned, stressed and tore her soul out to get married. Netflix’s The Wedding Coach season 1 is reflective of experiences — this series is a “lessons learned” log. Couples should enjoy the lead up to their big day and the wedding itself. That should be a minimum.

Here we have a Netflix series where Jamie Lee meets several couples and ensures that their wedding plan is as fun and romantic as possible. She relieves stress, removes the unnecessary “wants”, and focuses on the needs. Jamie Lee is giving a no-bullshit view on weddings, and we are all here for it. And she isn’t doing anything necessarily special — the comedian and author focuses on the basics, and ironically, keeping it simple makes the wedding more fun and magical.

There needs to be more series like this where realism is applied; we are often too consumed by series that throw the viewer into a world that does not exist for the average person. The Wedding Coach manages to represent the average couple that gets married — Jamie Lee brings a refreshing truth.
