“Window Side” is the point where Fatma collapses under the weight of its own illogical storytelling, just in time for the finale.
This recap of Fatma season 1, episode 5, “Window Side”, contains spoilers.
Fatma episode 5 has all the sped-up storytelling of a penultimate episode but also a crippling lack of logic. There are revelations, of course, but also gross police incompetence and utterly bizarre decision-making, all of which add up in “Window Side” to a show that has rather completely jumped the shark.
Still, there’s stuff to unpack nonetheless. Topping the agenda for Fatma is returning to her hometown in search of Zafer, a journey that she undertakes with Kadriye, rather reluctantly. Meanwhile, Mine deals with both the police and a rampaging Bayram, both of whom are on Fatma’s tail but are too useless to make much progress – a clear theme.
Case in point: After Kadriye confesses to Fatma about Zafer taking money from Ismail and the whole matter of the settlement money for Oguz’s death bringing him out of hiding, the bus is pulled over and searched by the police and they mistakenly arrest Kadriye, mistaking her for Fatma with very little actual due diligence. It’s such a silly development that it plays like a gag, and it’s the first of a few.
It doesn’t take long to get to the next one. Fatma, after making a secretive call, eventually arrives in her hometown and is told outright that Zafer is just roaming out and about. He’s wanted by God-knows how many people and he’s just cutting about in his hometown? And nobody there mentioned this to anyone? Fatma didn’t think to look there first? Blimey, this is daft.
It’s perhaps even sillier that Fatma, after finally confronting Zafer after killing several people at this point, tries to paint him as the real villain, as though the audience will agree with her. Even more ludicrous still is that Fatma then tries to fit Zafer up for the crimes she has committed – the call she made earlier was to the authorities tipping them off about his location, and the gun that everyone has been coveting for the entire season turns out to be his.
Her revenge almost complete, Fatma claims she has one thing left to do, and we can only imagine how ridiculous it’ll be given what has happened thus far.
Just think about this for a second. Think of how much evidence Fatma has left behind of all her various murders and then ask yourself how Zafer could possibly take the fall. This is to say nothing of the fact that he’s just chilling out in the open and everyone knows he’s there – if he needs an alibi he certainly has one.
As of Fatma season 1, episode 5, I must confess to being a little bit sick of it all. Roll on the finale.
