When They See Us (2019)
Ready Steady Cut critic Daniel Hart called When They See Us, “…a horrifying portrayal of the racial profiling and coerced confessions of The Central Park Five, which deepens as each chapter progresses.” The connections to Monster are not only obvious but most likely a direct inspiration. Five black teenagers had been convicted of raping one woman, even though they had been done by one serial rapist after they all spent a range of six to thirteen years in prison for a crime they didn’t commit. Make sure to check out the powerful documentary by Ken Burns, The Central Park Five (2012), as well.

Courage Under Fire
Courage Under Fire is about a soldier (Meg Ryan) being the first woman to receive the Medal of Honor. The investigation led by Denzel Washington leads to the revelation that there was more to the story of her unfortunate death. Her team, which includes a sickly-looking Matt Damon and Lou Diamond Phillips, are the ones privy to that information. Just like in Courage, the same story, situation, and behavior are repeated over and over until the final reveal can change the viewer’s perception in Monster’s third act.

Crown Heights (2017)
I have been praising Lakeith Stanfield’s talents for year’s and with his recent Oscar nomination, many will discover his outstanding work in Crown Heights. Based on a true story, he plays Colin Warner, a black man wrongfully convicted of murder. His best friend, Carl King (played by former all-pro Nnamdi Asomugha, also known as Kerry Washington’s husband) devotes all his time to prove his innocence.

Just Mercy (2019)
While succumbing to a small amount of melodrama, Just Mercy is ultimately a moving film about integrity, injustice, and the indictment of our criminal justice system. Based on a true story, Jamie Fox plays Walter MacMillan, a man wrongly convicted of murder and represented by an American hero, Bryan Stevenson (played by Michael B. Jordan), the founder of The Equal Justice Initiative. Like Steve Harmon, his character was inspired by thousands of wrongly convicted men and women with the only evidence against them seemed to be the color of their skin.

The Thin Blue Line (1988)
“Prosecutors in Dallas have said for years –– any prosecutor can convict a guilty man. It takes a great prosecutor to convict an innocent man,” is a quote from The Thin Blue Line that has always stuck in my mind, and you won’t forget after this documentary film that is an indictment of the flaws in the criminal justice system and the flaws we still need to address decades later — like anything, it’s a business.
