This recap of Hulu’s This Way Up season 2, episode 6 — the ending explained — contains major spoilers.

Read the review of the second season.

Episode 6 opens in purely comedic terms with a sense of seriousness with Aine (played by Aisling Bea) having an a**l procedure at the hospital after finding a large hemorrhoid while Shona (played by Sharon Horgan) has her womb checked. The doctor asks Shona if she still wants children, but she says no. He tells her he has plenty of eggs left.

Bad news

Richard tells Aine that he’s told his son Etienne about their relationship, so it might be worth getting a new tutor. She doesn’t look best pleased. And then Teresa from the rehab center calls Aine — she asks if she’s heard about Tom. It’s bad news and the camera zooms out. Aine is shell-shocked. He’s dead.

This is a major blow for the character in the finale.

The reception after the funeral

Aine heads towards Tom’s funeral reception at the pub. She’s introduces herself as Tom’s friend and is accompanied by Bradley. Aine tells her that she’s only there to pay her respects. Tom’s brother wants to know how they met.

In the bathroom, Aine hears two women criticizing Tom, and Aine gets emotional and defends him. She tells the women that Tom killing himself isn’t selfish. The women reveal they were not talking about Tom.

Aine is having a terrible time.

Chasing down James

At work, Aine will not let James avoid her any longer. She explains that Richard has told Etienne about their relationship. Aine makes a few jokes to lighten the mood and then apologizes for lying to him.

No such thing as bad press

At work, Shona and Charlotte’s business has had bad press, and they joke about it. However, they’ve had loads of emails supporting them. Shona and Charlotte hug it out.

Comforting Aine

Richard comforts Aine about her loss and says it’s really nice to see her unfurl. Aine takes it the wrong way but then apologizes for being shitty with him. Their relationship is becoming less clear as the series progresses.

Voice notes and voicemails

Shona learns her husband is coming home. She leaves him a voicemail saying she cannot wait to marry him. She mentions the possibility of wanting children. And then, Shona leaves Charlotte a voice note saying that she is proud of both of them and what they stand for despite the affair and breaking each other’s hearts…

The ending of This Way Up season 2, episode 6

The Covid-19 lockdown is approaching and Bradley wonders if it will actually happen. Aine and Bradley chill together comfortably, and Bradley talks about how it’s nice to be comfortable with someone, hinting at something more with his close friend. Meanwhile, Shona receives a phone call from Charlotte, and she says she never received a voice note — she accidentally sent it to Vish, who will now know she had an affair. Shona rings Aine for support so the sisters hang out. Shona fears she’s going to lose Vish. To cheer her up, Aine sings to her.

The episode ends with Aine at a support group and Tom is there. It’s a flashback — she talks about how there’s always greater days and tells everyone to keep going. Tom calls her a “soppy c**t” to end the series ironically.

The finale of This Way Up season 2 brings more problems for the sisters as they hit traumatic crossroads — let’s hope we get an even funnier and intriguing season 3.
