If you’re on the lookout for a new film to watch, this is one I highly recommend. With glitz, glamour, and drama, what more do you need?
This review of Amazon original film Everybody’s Talking About Jamie contains no spoilers.
After a successful run on the stage, the hit show Everybody’s Talking About Jamie has made it as an original film on Amazon Prime and some select cinemas. This film is inspired by the true story of Jamie Campbell, whose dream was to be a drag queen. They’ve just created some seriously good songs and dance sequences to create this much-needed feel-good film. There is also the documentary, Jamie: Drag Queen at 16, available to watch.
The film is set in Sheffield and being a proud Northerner (living not too far from Sheffield) I am so happy that we have a fun-filled, light-hearted, northern coming-of-age story that isn’t about nit, grit, and the mining pits. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, I am just glad to have a fresh film showcasing the eccentricity of modern Yorkshire.
Max Harwood is Sheffield schoolboy Jamie New, who longs to wear high heels and a tiara. Like Cinderella, all he wants to do is go to the ball in a gorgeous gown. Of course, there is a lot more to it than that – Jamie seeks the love and approval from his father, his friends, and like all teenagers is trying to figure out what his life is going to be like after high school.
The acting in the film is of a high standard. Max Harwood is one to watch, I highly expect his career to soar, whether it’s on the screen or stage. Energetic, full of charisma, he gave a full, honest performance.
Richard E. Grant is a delight – playing Hugo Battersby, AKA “Loco Chanel”, a veteran drag queen artiste who mentors Jamie in his new vocation, he shines bright. I saw a recent tweet from him showing his fans how he learned to walk in heels, and how his late wife, who sadly passed away recently, coached that wonderful Sheffield accent. His performance is brilliant. It’s as if Withnail went into drag.
Sharon Hogan and Sarah Lancashire are always a delight to watch — they are cast perfectly. Everyone who is involved with this show should be beaming with pride when watching this.
The songs are the ones featured in the stage show, the lyrics are smart, quirky, funny, and incredibly memorable. In the song This Was Me, there are flashbacks of 80’s and 90’s activists, battling prejudice, clause 28, and AIDS. Giving the viewer a small taste of the struggles that the LGBT community has faced. Whilst Everybody’s Talking About Jamie is an uplifting film, it is important to remember where this has all come from.
If you’re on the lookout for a new film to watch, this is one I highly recommend. With glitz, glamour, and drama, what more do you need? I recommended this film if you’re a fan of RuPaul’s Drag Race, Kinky Boots, The Full Monty, and anything with some true Yorkshire spirit.
