After earlier documentaries focused on Britney’s shocking ordeal, Britney vs Spears feels unnecessary. All in all, it’s boring with little insight into what we don’t already know.

This review of the Netflix documentary Britney vs Spears does not contain any spoilers.

The day before the latest court hearing regarding the conservatorship that controls Britney’s life and income comes another documentary that focuses on the horror she’s endured, Britney vs Spears. It begins with footage of Britney at a concert with fans chanting her name before it cuts to some home videos of Britney before she became famous. What follows is a chronological order of Britney’s life.

To be honest, the film is dull. What is the actual point of this documentary? The main issue with Britney Spears-focused documentaries is that lately, there’s been an ever-growing number of them. When the FX special Framing Britney Spears aired, it was shocking and provided much-needed insight into Britney’s legal battle. Plus it detailed the horrific harassment she has faced from the media. Yet, with all the latest developments easily accessed on social media, there’s little purpose to this retread.

Even the most haunting part of the film — an audio clip from Britney’s court appearance, where she said, “Not only did my family not do a goddamn thing, my dad was all for it. He loved every minute of it” — has been heard before. (The full audio is in full on YouTube).

Without providing much that isn’t known already, Britney vs Spears features interviews from a number of people, including her former manager Sam Lutfi. For anyone who has followed Britney’s career, they will know that Sam became Britney’s manager, after which some have accused him, namely Britney’s family, of drugging Britney.

In a sense, the film follows the structure a true-crime documentary would follow, and it doesn’t quite fit considering that Britney’s case is ever-changing, with tomorrow’s court hearing even likely to change things.

On a positive note; it’s fitting that it’s a fan that is behind the making of this documentary. Britney vs Spears will, nonetheless, show the outpour of support for Britney. #FreeBritney. For the Britney superfans, this will be an entertaining watch but there are few moments that will stick with the audience. Very much unlike how Framing Britney Spears did it. The quality of that effort is what brings Britney vs Spears down.

You can stream Britney vs Spears exclusively on Netflix.
