While an alternative Ultron story is not to be sniffed at, poor writing brings down a legitimate concept.
This recap of Disney+ series What If…? season 1, episode 8, “What If… Ultron Won?” contains spoilers.
I recently saw a tweet that wondered why all the stories for What If…? were all doom and gloom? That indeed ran through my mind when I watched episode 8, “What If…Ultron Won?”
What If…? season 1, episode 8 recap
Episode 8 opens with Black Widow on a mission, chased by Ultron’s robots — they have 90 seconds to stop Ultron. Hawkeye is helping her and fights them off, but he ends up in trouble. Black Widow helps him.
But…in this universe, Ultron got his wish and created his ideal organic body. Iron Man pleads with him, but he’s killed. Ultron sparks a nuclear catastrophe on earth, and the world ends. Ultron declares this as peace. It’s irony in his ideology.
After Ultron’s victory, Thanos randomly appears, but Ultron splits him in two instantly to kill him, and he takes the Infinity Stones. His powers grow, and he can see everything. He vows to bring “peace” to every corner of the universe. Episode 8 shows him destroying Asgard, The Sovereign, Sakaar, Ego, and Xandar.
Captain Marvel appears to fight him, but he wins, bringing more planets down with him. His mission is a success — every corner of the universe is destroyed, fulfilling his version of “peace.” But now, Ultron does not have a purpose, and it hits him that he will be alone forever, but suddenly, he becomes aware of the narrator Watcher and sees universes beyond his own. Watcher is a little shaken but believes that Ultron cannot take down the multiverse.
And then episode 8 brings us to another universe, and Black Widow and Hawkeye return. Watcher is desperate for them both to find the AI information to bring down Ultron’s code before he figures out the multiverse — he cannot intervene, as it is against his rules. Black Widow finds the information they need, but it’s too late — Ultron finds Watcher and the multiverse.
The ending explained
Hawkeye and Black Widow fight against Ultron’s army again. We see another sacrifice between these two characters; Hawkeye lunges into the cluster of robots and blows himself up to help Black Widow. After investigation, Black Widow learns Ultron is not in their universe. Meanwhile, Watcher is fighting Ultron, and they smash through many universes. Ultron routinely mocks him, unsure why Watcher does not use his powers to change the course of the multiverses.
As the episode ends, a depressed Watcher asks Doctor Strange for his help.
