Summary

The series ends on a stronger note as we understand what it meant for Colin to get a College Football offer.

This recap of Netflix’s limited series Colin in Black & White episode 6, “Dear Colin,” — the ending explained — contains spoilers.

Episode 6 completes the origin story for Colin Kaepernick — how did he get that lucrative offer to kickstart his football career? What did it mean for him? Well, the answers are in this finale.

Colin in Black & White episode 6 recap

Episode 6 opens up with a narration from the actual Colin Kaepernick about new parents in 1977. They had two children but had to adopt a third, but they were dealt with a blow last minute; they couldn’t have the child they were hoping for. Their second choice was Colin. This becomes important later.

Young Colin is interviewed about not taking his baseball offers and having no opportunities in football. His parents think he handled the interview well. Colin is eventually offered college football, but the narration brings us back to the summer before senior year to see how Colin achieved such a feat. He went to every summer football camp within the distance of his home. Colin is feeling stressed at waiting for interest, especially with the rejections.

Colin gets a University of California try-out. The team is impressed, but they’ve committed to someone else. Colin can now sense rejection. His frustrations build up. But Colin and his father do not give up; they post a letter to 119 coaches with his credentials.

This brings us back to the beginning. Coach Alvarez rings Colin to tell him he was considered, but there is no offer. His father tells Colin to kickass in playoffs, and they’ll see how great he is. However, that doesn’t end well either. Colin is distraught, depressed, hopeless. His friends remind him that he can be a rich major league baseball player still. But, Colin does not want to buckle in adversity.

The ending

With all hope lost, a glimmer of success finally arrives; Coach Ault from Nevada rings Colin after one of his scouts saw him at a basketball game. He gives him an offer. Colin is ecstatic. Colin narrates how he wants to prove himself, even if he wasn’t the first choice. He continues narrating about “being who you are” and not letting anyone break you. Colin always refused to be second choice, even with the systems against him. That’s the message that ends the series.

The message that Colin sends to the world, through the series “Black and White” is not only a powerful one, but a much needed one. The world needs to step back and realize the truth of how so many people are not just looked upon, but how they are treated. The documentary is the best, of the best.
