This recap of Netflix’s The Time It Takes season 1, episode 10, “Ten Minutes in the Present and One Minute in the Past,” — the ending explained — contains spoilers.

Read the review.

The final phase of the healing process is apparent in episode 10, but like all painful break-ups, there’s one last dilemma.

The Time It Takes season 1, episode 10 recap

Episode 10 opens with Lina and Nico at an aquarium in the past. In the present, Lina is organizing her life, and she sees an old photo booth picture of her and Nico, and she gently puts it in a bin bag. This feels like a new start for her.

Lina then visits her widowed father. She slowly settles in at her father’s house. They head out to a bar together to catch up. The father has a relatively simple life, and he hopes to go fishing again one day, but he’s busy tidying up his deceased wife’s things. He asks Lina why she’s leaving; she wants a fresh start as she isn’t with Nico anymore. She reassures her father that she’s okay.

The father tells her that when her mother died, he accepted he’d never be happy again. He never accepted losing her. Lina reminds him of the present and then says goodbye to him as she’s leaving for India.

Episode 10 flits to the past; Lina and Nico are saying goodbye to each other. There’s love there still. They hope whatever they are feeling will pass. They end up having sex. It then flits to the present, and Lina is thinking about that moment.

The ending

As she leaves her apartment, Lina is surprised to see Nico. He knows she’s leaving for India and says goodbye. He tells her that it didn’t work. He couldn’t forget about her. They both stand there, leaving the story for the audience to assume what will happen next.

Do we reckon they get back together and live happily ever after? Or do they restart this vicious cycle of breaking up?

I want to think that on this occasion, Lina found the strength to move on to leave for India after such a painful healing process. Sometimes, love is not enough to stay.
