Renewed or Cancelled – Will there be a Tiger King Season 3?
Tiger King isn’t the kind of show you’d expect to get even a second season, let alone a third. Releasing during lockdown due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it was the kind of bizarre, so-weird-it-must-be-true docuseries that captured the imaginations of a global audience with nothing better to do, and it has thoroughly infiltrated pop culture ever since. The story of gun-toting gay cowboy tiger owner Joe Exotic and his potential murderess animal activist arch-nemesis Carole Baskin was compelling in large part because of its weirdness, but was it the kind of thing that really needed a follow-up? Well, no, of course, but when has Netflix ever cared about that? Thus, a second season is already upon us, and people are already clamoring for Tiger King Season 3. But has Tiger King been renewed or canceled?
Tiger King Season 3 – Has Tiger King been renewed or canceled?
As of right now, it’s difficult to say. Usually, you can predict renewals based solely on viewing figures – the absurd popularity of the first season virtually guaranteed another. But it remains to be seen whether the second season will perform quite as impressively. It’s no longer as new or shocking as it was the first time around, and it isn’t releasing to an audience who’re trapped inside their homes with nothing else to do. It’ll no doubt be popular since the story is so compelling, but will it be popular enough?
There’s also something else to consider. With Tiger King being based on ostensibly true events, things have to happen in the real world in order for another season to become viable. And law and order move slowly. Joe Exotic remains in prison. Carole Baskin remains appalled by the first season’s depiction of her and has refused to participate in the show again. Don Lewis remains missing, presumed dead. None of this necessarily implies any speedy developments, even if the second season ends on a pretty big cliff-hanger that makes Joe’s release possible even without the involvement of Donald Trump. But it probably won’t happen soon.
Were Joe to be released, though, you could virtually bet the house on a third season. When that might be, though, is anyone’s guess. The efforts of John Phillips to finagle his exoneration might make for a compelling documentary, but the absence of Joe himself has already been felt in this season – it’d probably be a major issue in a third. The unsolved mystery of Don Lewis remains tantalizing, but it’s too far removed from Joe himself, who has been the main point of fixation for fans of the show, to really satisfy the dedicated audience.
There’s also the matter of Jeff Lowe and his wife, Lauren, who, having had their zoo raided and their animals seized by the federal authorities, are out for revenge. After teaming up with Joe’s legal team, perjuring themselves, and floating the possibility of an actual federal cover-up, this seems like it might be the most compelling element to build another season around. But, again, the news won’t come anytime soon.
Still, we’ll be sure to update this article with any more concrete information about whether Tiger King has been renewed or canceled as and when we get it.
