Renewed or Canceled – will there be a season 3 of The Great? (UPDATED!)
This article discusses whether there will be a season 3 of Hulu’s The Great and its renewed or canceled status. It does not contain spoilers.
Ah, The Great, a brilliant comedic stance, bringing revisionist history to Russia. The series took the world by storm when the first season came out. Some would argue that it strengthened Hulu in the streaming market, allowing The Handmaid’s Tale less room at the top of their library. The second season of The Great will be released on November 19, 2021, and the buzz is already taking Twitter by storm. The question is, though, can audiences expect season 3 of The Great, or will the balloon pop, forcing Hulu not to recommission their prized possession?

Since our last update, The Great has been renewed for a third season and we cannot contain our excitement! At Ready Steady Cut, we’ll keep you abreast on all renewal news as they come. But yes, it is confirmed, The Great will have a season 3.

At this moment in time, there has been no official confirmation that there will be a season 3 of The Great. However, we can speculate and discuss the likelihood that Hulu will renew for a third season. When The Great was initially pitched, it was for six seasons. It’s based on Tony McNamara’s play revolving around Catherine the Great, and McNamara also wrote the series. He always imagined that it would be a massive story, introducing key historical figures in Catherine’s life.
Season 1 was a massive success, and season 2 is still holding its 100% Rotten Tomato rating to give it a good start critically (RT score reported from November 18, 2021). If this is maintained and the audiences turn up as they did for the first season, we predict that season 3 will be commissioned quickly.
But, of course, this is not the only factor. While The Great exists on Hulu in the USA, it lives on other streaming services globally. While we do not expect this to be a problem, there is always a risk that commissions fall apart. Just recently, Star Trek fans were appalled by the treatment of Discovery for the “dark horse” streaming service Paramount+.
Let’s hope that The Great gets a season 3. At Ready Steady Cut, we gave it a favorable review, and it’s clear that it is an addictive and well-appreciated story.
We will keep you posted on the status of The Great as soon as we know, but for now, enjoy season 2 as Catherine the Great continues her absurd battle with Peter.
