The review of the Netflix film Bruised does not contain any spoilers.

Whilst on paper, Bruised may appear to be about an aging mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter attempting to reclaim their career, the film is a lot more heartfelt and emotional than that. With Halle Berry making her directorial debut, she also plays the lead role of Jackie Justice. Side note! The role nearly went to Blake Lively. Could you have pictured her in the role? After watching it; probably not. Halle nails this role.

In the movie Bruised, Jackie is a disgraced MMA fighter, who after suffering a hugely embarrassing fight, is now an alcoholic cleaner. After she ponders on whether to accept an offer to rejoin the fighting world, the son who she abandoned at birth reenters her life. Now, she must attempt to reclaim her title and build a future for her son.

Halle remains strong all the way through, and it’s not surprising to say that her acting abilities bring levels of emotion to the film. Even though she plays an MMA fighter, Halle showcases levels of vulnerability for the character. Whilst Halle is the leading starthe supporting cast members are just as great, whether they play aggressive boyfriends (Adan Canto) or likable and caring trainers (Sheila Atim), they’re all ace in the roles.

All that aside, some aspects of the film are predictable. For that reason, it’s a struggle to be genuinely surprised at any points during Bruised. Some aspects definitely fit with the “clichés” of the film world. But, if an emotional journey is what you’re seeking, watch Bruised, it’s worth it. The nature of the film and its story doesn’t justify the length (138 minutes), and as a result, the film could have been improved with a shorter runtime. In conclusion, it may not stand up to the high quality of Halle Berry’s past films, but it’s still worth watching.
