“Partners, Am I Right?” continues the run of good form from last week, connecting Hawkeye to the wider MCU in another way while continuing to develop Clint and Kate’s relationship.

Hawkeye really found its feet last week, and it continues that run of quality in “Partners, Am I Right?”, which doesn’t have a sequence as bombastic and enjoyable as the trick arrow car chase in “Echoes”, but makes up for that with some excellent quieter moments, very funny team-building, and an exciting last-minute cameo from one of the MCU’s newest Avengers-to-be.

Hawkeye season 1, episode 4 recap

We pick up where we left off, with Jack Duquesne holding Clint at sword-point after catching him and Kate snooping around in the Bishop penthouse. But a potentially calamitous situation quickly turns to an excitable one when Jack and Eleanor realize there’s an Avenger in their living room. It doesn’t exactly set Eleanor’s mind at ease to learn her daughter is working with Hawkeye on a potentially Avengers-level threat, which is how Kate describes their mission despite Clint trying to downplay their partnership, but at least she knows what she’s doing – sort of, anyway. She thinks Kate is making herself useful and makes Clint swear to protect her, even though he can’t bring himself to abandon the mission, but she seems totally oblivious about Jack’s potential involvement, which seems to extend far beyond being the new owner of Ronin’s sword (which Clint steals back).

We learn this through Laura, who Clint asks to investigate Sloan Limited. Turns out it’s a front for laundering money for the Tracksuit Mafia, and Jack is the CEO. There’s a whole sequence in which Kate watches him be surprisingly and genuinely tender with her mother, which means he’s definitely evil. Poor Eleanor.

Anyway, this is all standard Marvel villain plotting, but “Partners, Am I Right?” really excels when it folds the investigatory stuff into the character development. So, when Kate turns up at Moira Brandon’s apartment, where Clint is all alone, she brings all kinds of holiday trimmings, from Christmas movies to decorations, sweaters, and pizza for Pizza Dog. They work through the evidence and their next move while making smoothies and learning how to knock a man unconscious with a quarter. The deftness with which this overtly funny sequence transitions to a rather sad one speaks to how Hawkeye shouldn’t just be dismissed as throwaway family entertainment. Clint’s recollections of meeting Natasha, losing his family during the Blip, dealing with that loss “in his own way”, and Kate’s realization that he’s Ronin, are all decently written and very well performed.

We transition back to comedy just as fast, with Kate going to track down Clint’s remaining trick arrows by convincing the LARPers, most of whom are first responders, to grant them access to the NYPD facility where they’re being held. They’re willing to do so, but for a price – they want materials for new costumes, which Kate sees as an opportunity for her and Clint to get two new costumes of their own, his personal branding still being a running joke that gets a chuckle out of me every time it comes up.

And we mustn’t forget about Maya. She gets a mention when Clint gets the drop on Kazi to try and convince him to warn her off the Ronin chase, but she turns up in person when Kate and Clint try to retrieve a watch missing from the black-market auction which turns out to be in Maya’s apartment. This leads directly into the big action set-piece of the episode, which is a bust-up between Kate, Maya, Clint, and a mysterious assassin who ambushes him on the opposite rooftop. There’s a zipline, some arrows, some fisticuffs, a funny comedy beat when Kate gets thrown off the rooftop and Clint tells her to get to safety, only for her to take the stairs right back up to the roof, and the eventual reveal that the masked assassin is actually Yelena Belova. Clint isn’t exactly thrilled to learn that someone has hired a Black Widow, and Yelena, who still blames Clint for Natasha’s death, doesn’t quite seem like an ally at this point.

Let’s give it time, though. Just as we know Clint isn’t really going to prevent Kate from helping out in the mission, there’s no way that Marvel’s Next Big Thing is going to pull second-string villain duties. Look forward to all three teaming up at some point in the next couple of episodes – and if we’re lucky, we might even get that Kingpin reveal too.
