After last week’s episode of Hawkeye reintroduced Yelena Belova in the present-day MCU, this week’s promised an even bigger reveal. It was one that everyone predicted, of course, but nevertheless, the return of Vincent D’Onofrio’s Wilson Fisk is a pretty big deal, and it managed not to overwhelm what was a solid episode in several other respects too. Hawkeye season 1, episode 6, the finale, will doubtlessly bring all of this to something resembling a conclusion, but here’s where we stand until then:

Hawkeye season 1, episode 5 recap:

  • An opening sequence explained what happened to Yelena between Black Widow and now — she snapped out of existence during the Blip.
  • Having been sent home by Clint, Kate confided in her mother, Eleanor, about what they’d learned regarding Jack’s dealings with Sloan Ltd and the Tracksuits. He was taken away from the penthouse in handcuffs.
  • Yelena met with Kate to explain why she was in New York — to kill Clint, having been hired to do so by someone anonymous. Given what happened to Natasha, though, she wasn’t exactly reluctant.
  • Clint, dressed as Ronin, confronted Maya and told her that he was present on the night her father died after being tipped off by an informant who was working for her boss. She doesn’t believe him at first but quickly puts the pieces together. It seems Kazi is the likeliest culprit.
  • In a final twist, Yelena tells Kate who hired her — Eleanor. To make matters worse, she sends Kate a picture of her with the Kingpin, whose involvement Clint claims to have been worried about the entire time.

Needless to say, Vincent D’Onofrio’s continued involvement in the MCU is probably going to be the big takeaway from Hawkeye, but there is plenty more that could happen in next week’s finale, so let’s speculate:

  • Fisk will have a more personal involvement rather than being confined to a grainy image on a phone. One assumes he’ll make his presence felt but that he’ll be kept around for future projects rather than factoring heavily into this one.
  • Clint will die or retire — I’m reasonably confident in this. His death is probably unlikely unless it comes as a direct result of him saving either Kate or Yelena or both, which will work as atonement for the guilt he’s still carrying around over Natasha’s death. It might be neater, though, simply to have him win Yelena over and then retire to spend the holidays with his family, letting Kate assume his previous role.
  • Is Eleanor’s relationship with Fisk purely driven by financial gain, or is there something else there? I don’t mean romantically, just some other kind of connection. If she’s a criminal, how far back do her exploits go?
  • Is Eleanor working with Jack, and had him arrested to preserve her own cover, or against him, and had him arrested to get him out of the way? Remember, Maya and the Tracksuits weren’t privy to Yelena being hired by Eleanor and the Kingpin, so if the Tracksuits are his organization, having money laundered through his company, it stands to reason that if he and Eleanor were on the same page, he’d have known about the Black Widow.
  • We’re 100% getting a Kate and Yelena (and probably Clint) team-up action sequence, and it’ll doubtlessly be great.
