Summary
The season finale of Welcome to Chippendales was a solid end to a show that featured two great performances from Kumail Nanjiani and Murray Bartlett.
In the last episode of Welcome to Chippendales, we had the complete meltdown of Somen (Kumail Nanjiani) that really set up the season finale as one wild ride. From Chippendales LA being shut down to the murder of Nick (Murray Bartlet) to Irene (Annaleigh Ashford) leaving Somen, the downfall of Somen is imminent. Let’s dive into the season finale of the show.
Welcome to Chippendales Season 1 Episode 8 recap
We move to London, England, five years later, where we see Ray outside a club with a gun at his hip, ready to attack some people. Then we move to Switzerland, where Chippendales is coming to town, and Somen is walking down the street. Next, we see Somen walk into a bar where he meets Ray for drinks. They embrace as if they haven’t seen each other in a long time. Finally, Ray brings up Chippendales and how widely successful it is worldwide.
Shortly after, Somen is freaking out a little because he thinks someone is following him. Ray tries to talk him off a ledge and says to go back to his hotel so they can catch up. We hear Somen ask him what went wrong in London. He said he was all set up to do what he was supposed to until a parade came through. Now, Ray says that he will get the job done. If he doesn’t, he will give back the money Somen gave him to take out the three dancers. However, he says it very loudly and suspiciously to the point Somen thinks something is up. Then, a phone rings, and it gets even weirder.
After Somen tries to leave, Ray begs him to stay and drink with him. When he finally gets him to relax, we see the FBI agents next door listening to the conversation. Now, we move to two months prior, where we see two strangers exchanging drugs together in a car, and they arrest a man. Wild enough, it was the guy that killed Nick, and he flipped on him, giving them Ray. After that, the FBI got to Ray and had him wearing a wire to take down Somen, or he will spend the rest of his life in jail, and now we are back to the present day.
Ray says things used to be so good, but Somen mentions that it is much better now. After more back-and-forth conversation, Ray is back, trying to pry a little to get him to admit to things. So, Ray tries to do therapy with Somen, and he flips the switch by saying he didn’t do the job in London. And boom goes the dynamite, and it causes Somen to flip out and admit to everything. Now, the FBI has everything they need to put him away. Next thing you know, they bust into the room and arrest Somen.
In jail, Somen is talking to his lawyer, who tells him he needs a real criminal attorney. She tells him that he is being charged as Rico, meaning that Chippendales is being classified as a criminal organization. As a result, they are going to take everything from him, and that will leave nothing for Irene or his daughter. In his prison cell, we see Nick talking to Somen (with blood from the gunshot wounds) about how dumb he was for everything he did.
Welcome to Chippendales Season 1 Ending Explained
After the back and forth with the ghost of Nick, we hear a buzzing sound go off, and the cops run back to see Somen’s body hanging as he took his own life. As a cop pushes his body through the halls, we see white lettering across the screen saying, “Somen Banerjee took his own life hours before his sentencing. As a result, the government couldn’t seize his assets. Irene was able to inherit everything – including Chippendales.”
If I’m honest, the series had so much promise, and they didn’t nail the landing. I know they told the story of how it all played out, but they took the life out of the show within the last two episodes. That said, Kumail Nanjiani and Murray Bartlett gave two award-worthy performances in the overall series. Overall, I liked the series but failed to love it because of how it played out.
