After a longer wait than usual, the latest episode of 1883, “The Crossing”, saw the traveling immigrants finally reach the river that has caused so much commotion between Shea and James. And while the crossing might ultimately be described as a success, it wasn’t one without its problems, and the knock-on effects of it will doubtlessly be felt in 1883 season 1, episode 5. Here’s what happened:

1883 season 1, episode 4 recap:

  • Shea and Thomas continued to fret about the survival of the immigrants, especially with the river crossing looming. Having been left a little late because of previous disagreements, the crossing was especially perilous.
  • Shea is becoming somewhat obsessed with the survival of the immigrants, but his leadership style is causing problems. The callous way in which he demands they leave all their belongings behind doesn’t endear him to the travelers, even if the crossing proves deadly for many, and would have proved deadly for all if it weren’t for his advice.
  • With the Duttons — sans Elsa — crossing the river first, there’s still a literal and metaphorical disconnect between James’s family and everyone else.
  • Many of the immigrants died during the crossing, but the bulk of the party was able to make their way to the other side.

1883 season 1, episode 5 release date:

The latest episode of 1883 is now slated for release on 16 January 2022 at 3 am ET.

Preview and predictions for 1883 season 1, episode 5:

While the latest episode wasn’t exactly a treasure trove of new developments, there is still plenty to speculate on in its aftermath. Here are some things to consider going forwards:

  • Will the immigrants see the wisdom in Shea’s leadership, or will their losses on the river only compound their mistrust in him?
  • Elsa and Ennis’s relationship is developing, but is Margaret going to get in the way of it?
  • Speaking of relationships, are we seeing a burgeoning, perhaps ill-advised one between Thomas and Noemi?
  • Will the division between the Duttons and Shea widen, or are they going to find a common purpose as the road ahead gets even tougher?

I’m definitely excited about this great show and people need to realize how the times were back then. A lot of the German immigrants only made it to Fredericksburg & Bourne Texas. I hunted there for 15 years and heard stories that a lot of them ended up in that area around 1880. They were some nice people to meet and hang out with for sure. I love this series and will continue to the end.
