This Is Not a Comedy ending explained – what happens to Nuncio?
This article discusses the ending of the Netflix film This Is Not a Comedy and will contain spoilers.
Netflix Mexican film This Is Not a Comedy is a movie about the grimness in the banality of everyday life, which we deny by having a smiling face all the time. It is a very relatable film that helps us to empathize and has a reflection of us through the pivotal character of Gabriel Nuncio. But the film ends in an absurd way, which leads to confusion in our minds.
Throughout the film, Nuncio is portrayed as a broke comedian, who tries to write an ambitious movie script. But everyone who hears the script doesn’t understand the actual meaning of his vision through it. It gets rejected by telling him it is not a movie but an anecdote or people misinterpret it as a comedy.
But Nuncio always tries to take these critiques with the smiling face as if it seems like a comedy but deep inside, there is dullness. Even at the time, when his financial conditions are crumbling down, he faces rejection from the people he thinks close and his career also comes to a stalemate. But, in this moment of misery, he envisions the scenes of roaming on Mars along with a child and a woman. This vision of Nuncio is used several times in the film. And, in those moments we see him the freest and happiest. He dances carefree at that time transcendending himself to another dimension. It gives him hope and becomes his catharsis. But, in the state of peer pressure and the rules of the society, this also crumbles down soon.
Netflix film This Is Not a Comedy ending explained
In the end, we see him break completely. At that moment, the face of Lyre comes in front of him. We see Lyre at the very beginning of the film as the girlfriend of Nuncio. She claims that she has some superpowers to communicate with aliens. She tells Nuncio that she is going to join an intergalactic confederation and he should come with her. But, Nuncio denies it as he is offered to be a sperm donor for his best friend as well as this idea seems very weird and unrealistic.
In my perspective, Lyre represents the desires of Nuncio. She is the inner light, which Nuncio seeks. But, the light diminishes in the everyday race of living. So does Lyre too. She has maybe been forgotten until Nuncio becomes completely broke. One day, when he drives, he hears the voice of Lyre on the radio set of his car. She tells him that his lost dog Somersault is with her and he is happy. Now maybe the dog represents the broken Nuncio and with this message, Lyre convinces him to be happy to accept the light and hope by following her path in the intergalactic trip. At that crucial moment, Nuncio decides to follow the path Lyre once told him. He sets to go to the top of Amethyst. In the specific place, Nuncio encounters a beam of light from the sky. He stands under it and we see him goes up towards the sky.
Is he able to connect with the aliens? Or this is another dream sequence he encounters as escapism from cruel life? As the film ends with too much ambiguity, there can be multiple interpretations. But optimistically, I interpret that after all these heartbreaks, Nuncio finds some hope in his life by letting the light inside him. Thus he knows his true meaning in this cosmos — to live freely. As at the end of the tunnel, there is light, Nuncio perhaps finds some solace and hope this way.
