Who is Anna Delvey in Inventing Anna season 1?

Originally born Anna Sorokin, she’s a Russian-born German who traveled to New York in 2013. Although she claims that “Delvey” is her mothers maiden name, her family have gone on to claim that they have no idea where she got the name from. With a lack of closeness towards her family, Anna claims that in an effort to escape her father she has become just like him. Whilst her mother says that “Anna was a stranger under the roof”.

Clearly a very ambitious individual, Anna created a business plan, and through her “image”, pulled in a group of advisors and made up a dream team to begin work at 281 Park Avenue. But with her ambition, came lies. Her true persona still remains very much up for debate, as opinions on her vary. From Vivian to Rachel, very few seem to share the same opinion on Anna.

What does Anna Delvey do?

After her crimes come to light, Anna gets arrested as part of a sting operation and, as a result, resides in Rikers Island at the beginning of Inventing Anna. Not wanting to be a dumb socialite, Anna rejects a plea deal, even though it means that if she loses the trial, she may face a sentence of up to 15 years.

Whilst she awaits the trial, her case gains the interest of journalist Vivian. (A a features writer at Manhatten Magazine). Throughout Inventing Anna, Vivian researches Anna, and learns several details about the life Anna lived as a fake heiress.

Anna lied her way to living the high life, staying in hotels without payment, and spending lavishly. Ultimately, her life starts to crumble, and as friends start to abandon her, hotels throw her out, and a bench warrant gets issued for Anna. After a brief stay in L.A, where Anna “collapses” as a way to extend her visa, Anna finally gets arrested, and the trial proceedings begin.

Protective of her image, Anna delays the trial twice due to a wardrobe issue and even threatens to fire her lawyer, Todd, if he does not find her better clothes. Eventually, after a media frenzy towards the trial, Anna gets found guilty on eight out of ten charges. (Anna still won two of the big charges). Regardless, she gets sentenced to four to twelve years at Bedford Hills. In the closing moments, and before she goes to Bedford Hills, Anna asks Vivian to come to visit her. The credits reveal that Anna got released from prison on the 11th of February 2021. Although, just a month later, she was taken into custody by ICE for overstaying her visa.
