This preview of Thirty-Nine season 1, episode 3, and Thirty-Nine season 1, episode 4 contains spoilers for the first two episodes.
The first two episodes of Thirty-Nine introduced us to a compelling trio of characters as they all approach 40 years of age, despite not looking a day over 25. It’s a funny, heartwarming slice-of-life drama with excellent chemistry between the leads, but also a pang of sadness and inevitability stemming from the death of one of three women looming over all the proceedings. After two episodes, here’s where we’re up to:
- Mi-jo, a successful dermatologist, is due to take a work sabbatical when she meets and begins to fall for Seon-u.
- Many scenes — several of them involving alcohol — help to flesh out this relationship early, with the impending sabbatical working as a kind of ticking-clock device.
- Chan-young, an acting coach having an affair with a married man, was revealed in the second episode to be the friend who dies in the future. This revelation is sure to reshape the show in many ways and create a good helping of emotion.
