Summary

The 10-year diary of artist Andy Warhol is brought to visual life in this biographical documentary series.

Netflix documentary series The Andy Warhol Diaries will be released on the streaming service on March 9, 2022.

Andy Warhol is one of the world’s most famous artists who shaped and changed art, pop culture, and the fashion industry. His works continue to influence and inspire people today. From album covers to a canvas in your house, Warhol is very much alive through his work. This docuseries, over six episodes, will showcase the life and works of Warhol. At just under an hour each, the series is interesting, eye-opening, and fascinating.

The novel of the same name, which was first published in 1989, two years after his death, is the framework for this docuseries. The book was edited by Warhol’s friend and frequent collaborator, Pat Hackett. Warhol would call Hackett in the morning and describe his previous day, slowly becoming his diary. As someone who was almost a mystery to the public, this diary is a close insight into who he really liked, what he really thought, his personal thoughts and feelings.

With the incredible AI technology, we can hear the voice of Warhol talk to us through his personal diary entries. The Andy Warhol Foundation has given permission for the use of AI voice, which for me, gives excellent credibility. Not only do we have this wonderful voice, but we also have real footage from interviews with Warhol, and footage from his galleries. We hear stories from friends, family, editors, art curators, colleagues, artists, and fans. There have been many documentaries about Warhol before, but this one fees very detailed, thought-out, and planned as if by Warhol himself.

We hear details about stories such as in Studio 54, attending Liv Taylor’s party which hosted over 2000 people, getting in at 6:30 am, and missing Pat’s call. His relationship with Jed and how they didn’t like the Studio 54 days. A lot of talk and scope around Warhol’s sexuality. We’ve always liked labels, as much as we want to get away from them. Warhol was very private with his sexuality. Which probably was a good power play at it was a very homophobic time in America. We learn about his personal relationships, his life as a male model, and his life before he died.

Warhol is associated with creativity and craziness, he clearly wanted the fame, the fortune, and the lifestyle that came with it. As Rob Lowe says in the documentary “he would have loved today, the freak-show that is contemporary culture.” This series is an insight into the life of Andy Warhol. An excellent watch for art fans, Warhol fans, and anyone interested in that period to learn about someone who changed art and culture forever.
