Hulu’s The Dropout, based on the same-titled ABC News podcast hosted by Rebecca Jarvis and detailing the disgraced biotechnology company Theranos and its founder Elizabeth Holmes, is one of a few shows airing at the moment based around the cutthroat culture of start-up entrepreneurship. It’s also due to end on April 7, with its eighth and final episode bringing the story to a conclusion. Or will it? Given the show’s success and popularity, The Dropout Season 2 isn’t outside the realms of possibility, so here’s all the info available about it so far:
Renewed or cancelled status – Will there be a Season 2 of The Dropout?
As of right now, there hasn’t been any official confirmation that The Dropout has been renewed for a second season. And while the show has definitely amassed a pretty sizeable following and performed well critically (it’s currently sitting pretty at 88% on Rotten Tomatoes, and our own coverage has been positive), the podcast on which it is based only ran for one season. With the story being due to catch up to its real-life counterpart, there isn’t any obvious material on which to base a second season. The show has also been billed as a miniseries, which might not mean much in some instances, but in this case, likely argues against the possibility of renewal.
What is The Dropout?
The Dropout, based on the eponymous ABC Audio podcast, is about the rise and fall of Elizabeth Holmes and her company, Theranos. The show touches on experiences that likely motivated Holmes’s deceptions and lies in a linear fashion, starting from her preteens and all the way to her exposure as a fraud.
Who is in it?
- Amanda Seyfried as Elizabeth Holmes
- Naveen Andrews as Sunny Balwani
- Utkarsh Ambudkar as Rakesh Madhava
- Michel Gill as Chris Holmes
- Bill Irwin as Channing Robertson
- William H. Macy as Richard Fuisz
- Elizabeth Marvel as Noel Holmes
- Laurie Metcalf as Phyllis Gardner
- Mary Lynn Rajskub as Lorraine Fuisz
- Kate Burton as Rochelle Gibbons
- Stephen Fry as Ian Gibbons
- Michael Ironside as Don Lucas
What do we know about the second season so far?
Nothing! And given the above, that’s unlikely to change. The Dropout has a pretty obvious one-and-done miniseries format, is based on a single season of a podcast, and tells a true, relatively complete story. Unless Hulu see something utterly astronomical in the show’s popularity, our prediction has to been that The Dropout Season 2 is very unlikely to see the light of day.
