Three separate storylines in the series come to a resolution of sorts in Chapter Four. Young Sunja departs for Japan after her wedding day, old Sunja returns to Korea for the first time in fifty years and Solomon’s deal finally falls through. This exceptional episode covered many themes and plot points, so with no time to waste, let’s get to it. Here’s everything that happened in episode four of Pachinko:

  • Teen Sunja marries Isak and packs for Japan. Her mother manages to acquire rare white rice for their final meal. She packs Sunja’s clothes and prepares mentally for their final goodbyes.
  • Sunja’s mother imparts many words of wisdom and passes her two silver rings to use in an emergency. Whilst at the harbour, Sunja interacts with a famous singer who is also boarding the ship.
  • On the ship, Sunja falls ill and Isak races to finds her some water. The lower decks are cramped and dirty, whereas the upper decks are lavish and calm. The singer plays to a crowd of wealthy people, singing in Japanese.
  • The singer stops mid-song and changes language, singing in Korean. The audience are appalled and call for the guards to drag her off stage. Down on the lower decks, the passengers and miners sing along to their own motherland tunes.
  • The singer pulls out a knife and stabs herself to death in protest.
  • In 1989, old Sunja packs for her trip back to Korea. She hasn’t stepped foot on home soil in over fifty years.
  • Solomon meets with the bankers to sign the final contract with the landowner. She hesitates, feeling pressurised by her own family and the smug businessmen. She speaks in Korean to Solomon only. The landowner talks about the ship the miners took to Japan for work. How they all lived in horrible conditions and struggled to rent anywhere. Her blood, sweat, and tears have gone into that house and she won’t give it up. She asks Solomon if her mother would sign the deal and he replies, ‘don’t do it’.
  • She doesn’t sign the deal and an enraged Tom swears at Solomon. He runs out into the street, shedding his business attire. Feeling free at last, he dances in the rain.
  • Old Sunja exits the taxi and walks to the beach, stepping out into the bay. She appears elated to be home.
