“Can’t Fight This Feeling” explored the two lead teen’s traumatic pasts, while in Michelle’s present, lawyers collated the evidence in preparation for the ensuing trial. Michelle’s mental state continued to decline and she drifted off into a Glee-inspired musical number to perfectly depict this detour from reality. Here’s what happened in episode four of The Girl from Plainville:
- Coco attempts to kill himself but calls for help before it’s too late. His parents argue about what to do with the troubled teen. Coco dismisses all requests to go to therapy from his father but continues to take the medicine he’s been given.
- Michelle’s best friend Susie confesses that her mother doesn’t want them to hang out together anymore. They nearly kiss and Michelle is sent home. Susie ignores her text messages and when Michelle turns up on her doorstep she says that she isn’t a lesbian and that you need to stop obsessing over me. A tearful Michelle leaves, driven home by her oblivious mother.
- Coco texts Michelle about his suicide attempt and states that his life’s a joke. Michelle comforts him and they both declare their love for one another.
- Coco’s granddad gifts him with his very own truck and he fantasizes with Michelle about moving to California.
- In the present, the lawyers look for a motive. Katie is presented with a possible reason for Coco’s suicide, but because it doesn’t fit their line of attack it is ignored. Coco was beaten up by his father just weeks before his death, which could explain a motive. Katie says the jury can never see these photographs.
- Michelle’s lawyer, Joseph Cataldo, speaks with the opposition and starts to believe that Michelle might actually have done it. He tells Michelle she could get up to twenty years in prison for this, so she needs to tell him the truth.
