Tomorrow is a frustrating show, one that just can’t decide on a consistent tone or set of internal rules. Each week’s double-bill is turning into a lucky dip of which problems will emerge, even while the cases themselves continue to be varied and oftentimes quite intriguing. This week’s duo delivered concerned both an eating disorder and a moral conundrum, and while both had their moments, neither really dug into the issues at hand or really convinced me that Tomorrow season 1, episodes 9 and 10 are likely to change the trajectory that the show has been on thus far. With that being said, here’s an idea of where both episodes landed for me, taken from the recaps themselves:

Episode 7: That isn’t to say that the sloppy writing and slapdash plotting has gone anywhere because that’s here too, with the new case raising some awkward questions about how this whole reaper thing is supposed to work. There’s an element of detective work here as circumstances suddenly mandate a more analog approach for the team as they try to identify Shin Ye-Na, a suicidal bulimic whose eating disorder stemmed from a failed suicide attempt in her youth. The fact that this was never addressed at the time by a team whose explicit function is to stop suicides raises some awkward questions, doesn’t it?

Episode 8: What are rules for if not to be broken? That seems to be the moral of Tomorrow, which can’t help but veer around the established framework of its own universe. For many, this won’t be too much of a problem, and in truth, it’s not that much of an issue for me either. But I think it’s indicative of something larger, a greater worry with Tomorrow’s writing and storytelling in general. It’s too safe.
