Apple TV+ has found a hit with Slow Horses, a darkly comic spy drama adapted from the first of Mick Herron’s popular spy novels. Week on week the show has pulled in solid numbers and generated a good amount of positive online chatter, and with the first season nearing its end now, people are already wondering about the possibility of Slow Horses Season 2. Luckily, you’ve come to the right place for that information. Here’s everything we know.
Renewed or canceled status – Will there be a Slow Horses Season 2?
Yes, Apple have already renewed the spy drama for at least another six episodes, and what’s more is that, according to series director James Hawes, they’ve already been filmed. In an interview with Deadline, he said, “Apple have already shot the next six, and they will air sometime later this year. And there is every hope and intention that there will be another couple of seasons in the immediate future.”
With this good news, fans may well be wondering about the potential of more than two seasons. Judging by Hawes’s quote above, it’s clearly something he’s interested in, and the source material is out there, given that Herron has penned seven of the novels, with an eighth due next month. Interest in the property has never been higher, and that symbiotic multimedia relationship is likely to prove very beneficial.
What is Slow Horses?
After a botched and publicly embarrassing training mission, British MI5 agent River Cartwright is exiled to Slough House, an administrative purgatory for service rejects. Known as slow horses, Cartwright and his fellow employees must endure dull, paper pushing tasks and their miserable boss, Jackson Lamb, who expects them to quit out of boredom and frustration. Life in Slough House is defined by drudgery until the slow horses become entangled in a dangerous gambit by Regent’s Park.
Who is in it?
Gary Oldman tops the billing as a flatulent, cynical spy named Jackson Lamb. The ostensible protagonist is Jack Lowden’s River Cartwright, a recently demoted spook, while Kristin Scott Thomas plays Diana Taverner, the Deputy Director-General of MI5. Away from these core characters, there are recurring roles for Saskia Reeves, Olivia Cooke, Dustin Demri-Burns, Rosalind Eleazar, Paul Higgins, Christopher Chung, and Steven Waddington, among. Depending on the outcome of the first season, some or all of these may return for a second season.
What do we know about Slow Horses Season 2?
Thus far very little, though it stands to reason it would be adapted from the second book in the series, titled Dead Lions. The premise is as follows:
The disgruntled agents of Slough House, the MI5 branch where washed-up spies are sent to finish their failed careers on desk duty, are called into action to protect a visiting Russian oligarch whom MI5 hopes to recruit to British intelligence. While two agents are dispatched on that babysitting job, though, an old Cold War-era spy named Dickie Bow is found dead, ostensibly of a heart attack, on a bus outside of Oxford, far from his usual haunts.
But the head of Slough House, the irascible Jackson Lamb, is convinced Dickie Bow was murdered. As the agents dig into their fallen comrade’s circumstances, they uncover a shadowy tangle of ancient Cold War secrets that seem to lead back to a man named Alexander Popov, who is either a Soviet bogeyman or the most dangerous man in the world. How many more people will have to die to keep those secrets buried?
