Tomorrow delivered a strong double-bill of episodes this week, with both emotional poignancy and a welcome degree of sensitivity suggesting that the show might have finally turned a corner and figured out what kind of drama it wants to be. There might be some quibbles if you’re really looking for them, but the overall impression was very positive, and hopefully Tomorrow season 1, episodes 11 and 12 can continue this run of good form. Here are some excerpts:

Episode 9:

Amongst all this sadness and, let’s be frank, blatant emotional manipulation, there are at least efforts to tie some of these themes and ideas back to the ongoing character arcs. There is certainly something to be said for animals being able to sense our pain, and desiring to protect us from it, and one imagines that many suicides are probably rooted in the same notion of freeing others from a burden. It’s a sad note, and in many ways, Tomorrow gets a lot of mileage from it, even though it still has some odd tonal discrepancies and is using the internationally recognized shortcut to emotional resonance, which is a very good boy. Tomorrow still has its share of the usual problems, but let’s face it – everything is improved by the presence of a dog.

Episode 10:

This, I feel, is exactly the kind of show that Tomorrow has been striving to be since the beginning, and while it has taken a long time to get to this point, I’m really glad that we’re seeing something positive out of it, even at this later stage. The character moments here work, the subject is sensitively and poignantly handled, and the whole thing achieves a meaningful resolution that doesn’t earthquake the show’s own fiction too much. Sure, there might be some logical quibbles if you’re really looking for them, but for once, the overall impact is worth putting aside any nitpicks. Hopefully, this run of good form continues.
