Why should Amazon Prime have all the fun of having exclusive Michael Connelly content? The worldwide streaming leader now has thrown its hat in the ring. We saw this material adapted into Hollywood with the well-received, career-rejuvenating 2011 Matthew McConaughey movie.
Will this be a massive hit for Netflix? Produced by David E. Kelley (Picket Fences), it has changed hands and been recast a handful of times before not being picked up as a pilot for CBS in 2020. Still, with the beloved source material, prestige studio heavyweights behind it, and a perfect platform for serialized storytelling, won’t season two be a forgone conclusion for The Lincoln Lawyer?

Netflix is not like other streaming platforms. They will take their time before deciding on renewal, whereas Amazon will choose relatively quickly, and even HBO does this to increase the rating by announcing midseason. (However, they have been known to cancel anyway — take a look at the Lisa Kudrow 2005 show, The Comeback).
One thing working against the series is there will be no cross-over of Bosch. Amazon, who recently had a spinoff series, Bosch: Legacy, still owns those rights. In the book series, Haller is Bosch’s half-brother, and a handful of characters pop in those detective novels. The series is also unusually conventional for Netflix, which is more glossy and has less grit than one would expect.
You know what, though? Netflix could use a little mainstream convention in its programming. With a built-in fanbase, Netflix may have a hit on its hands.
Prediction: A toss-up. I’m leaning towards a renewal even though Netflix is ruthless when canceling the series. My money is on The Lincoln Lawyer getting a second season, but not more than three.
