As we’ve been building towards all throughout the season, the finale of Maverix finds the team at the Nationals, with all of their attendant personal dramas following them and only one chance to make it through the sudden-death semifinal. This is what we’ve all been waiting for, folks, at least in that sense of a mostly predictable young-teen drama plodding inexorably towards a terminus.

Maverix season 1, episode 10 recap

Things naturally start with some bad news — Griffo is injured and taken away on a stretcher, leaving the riders to essentially fend for themselves, spurred on by their newfound sense of unity and a bit of encouragement from turncoat Kaden. But you can feel the problems building up, especially around Richie, who’s adamant about his bike needing a little more fine-tuning and keeps getting ignored.

In the first race, naturally Richie stalls on the first turn. Jenny falls off and Angelique stops to help her up, and Katzo enjoys a fairly comfortable lead. Things aren’t exactly off to a great start.

Ahead of the second semifinal race, Scott is reluctant to leave Griffo’s side, but naturally, the older man talks him into racing. Meanwhile, Katzo plots to take him out right at the start of the race with a sacrificial move from Kaden, which is apparently the responsibility of the team’s new blood — they throw themselves on the grenade for the number-one rider. But this isn’t that kind of show. Apparently, it isn’t even the kind of show that shows the actual race itself, since we cut right to the end, with Kaden having smilingly taken the victory, contrary to his team’s instructions.

Kaden gets to enjoy the pampered treatment of the team’s number-one rider fresh from his victory, but he’s given a moral dilemma when Maverix discover that their bikes have been sabotaged, presumably by Katzo. Of course, Richie is able to magically solve the problem, and finally stands up to his overbearing parents in the meantime, and Kaden, not a fan of the interference, whips off his Katzo colors to reveal a Maverix jersey underneath. He’s back on-side, and Griffo is back at the track to make sure there’s no funny business, and this show has a really terrible sense of how to depict the passage of time. He was bedbound, like, minutes prior!

Anyway, basically all of Maverix with the exception of Angelique compete in the final, which Scott wins after a hotly-contested race that Maverix really dominates. They’re the hottest ticket in motocross now, so it’s time to look forward to next season. Whether that’ll mean another one for the show, though, still remains to be seen.
