You can take the boy out of the farm, but you can’t take the farm out of the boy. Michi is crucially important in the finale of New Heights — he has to decide whether he allows the family farm to be sold or if he takes responsibility for it as heirship. Let’s recap episode 8, the finale.
New Heights season 1, episode 8 recap – the ending explained
Episode 8 opens with Michi about to embark on his new life, in a new apartment with his boyfriend. Meanwhile, the farm is ready to be given up and it’s in the final stages. Katharina is prepared to start her new life too. But then, Lorenz confronts Michi angrily about the waiver of the farm. He wants to keep the place, but Michi tells him that he isn’t skilled enough to run the business. Later on, Lorenz tells his mother he doesn’t want to live with her moving forward.
Sarah learns that her mother accepted a bribe from her rapist’s family, and she’s disgusted at her. Katharina explains that they were intimidated by them when it was clear Sarah was pregnant and that Kurt tried to contact the rapist’s parents, but they had a lot of money and a fancy lawyer. They were no match as farmers and accepted the money. Sarah is disgusted they’ve accepted their money.
Michi visits his sister and gives her a tight hug before talking about how the sale of the farm was a good decision, regardless of her trying to sabotage him. Sarah tells him to “f**k off.” Michi returns to the farm and fixes the roof, while his boyfriend wants to know about their plans for the airport to leave for their new home.
Michi’s boyfriend keeps on contacting him, but he’s hesitant about his new life and ends up in a sexual altercation with Dome, who doesn’t want him to leave. Michi resists and walks away.
The ending
But by the end of season 1, Michi makes a crucial decision.
Katharina finds out that Lorenz has not signed the waiver to hand over the farm, so she tells him to sign it. He signs it begrudgingly. Meanwhile, Michi leaves the taxi that he was in with his partner while heading to the airport. He’s changed his mind regarding the farm, but that means the end of their relationship. Michi rings his mother and tells her not to sign anything in the legal meeting. He argues that as heirship, he revokes the sale of the farm. The buyers are furious, but there’s nothing they can do.
His mother slaps him and walks away as they meet. She knows her new life is over. Lorenz is in high spirits to see the cows return as his brother Michi embraces him. The farm is saved, at least, for now.
