And he’s right. Hence why she insists on sending them out first, even though the bride’s family typically does so, and hence why they’re all swanky designer items, some with the tags still on. Hui-seon warns Na-eun to read between the lines, but for once she just sees the upside – she’s touched that her mother-in-law-to-be would go all-out.
But Na-eun’s mother isn’t exactly touched by the gesture, especially when she spies the hefty tags. It’s no accident. A statement has been made, and it’s one that she intends to respond to in kind. It’s petty oneupmanship, to be sure, but when your reputation is on the line…
Once the penny drops, Na-eun begins characteristically overthinking everything.
The evil stepmother is a pretty common trope, and Welcome to Wedding Hell presents a very tame version of it here. In fact, the entire show is quite tame, really skating lightly across the surface of the issues it’s addressing. For now, that’s more or less fine, but in the long run that feeling of inconsequentiality might be the show’s undoing.
This, and it’s worth mentioning that little about the central couple feels all that believable, even now, and the idea of them getting married and lasting is difficult to buy into. Maybe that’s the point. Maybe the point will ultimately be about how two people with very different outlooks and approaches can ultimately find a way to happily coexist, with marriage as the institution that actually brings them together rather than forces them apart. We’ll have to wait and see.
