You might recognize the title Irma Vep as that of a cult classic Olivier Assayas movie from 1996, and you’d be right. That film, a well-regarded and self-reflective satire of the filmmaking process starring Assayas’s wife-to-be, Maggie Cheung, is considered one of Assayas’s finest films.
Now, in 2022, 26 years after the original film’s release, Irma Vep is an eight-part limited HBO series adapted by Assayas himself, though in his typical style, is isn’t so much a continuation or a reboot but rather a very specific meta intertwining of past and present. Here’s the official synopsis, per HBO:
“Mira is an American movie star disillusioned by her career and a recent breakup, who comes to France to star as ‘Irma Vep’ in a remake of the French silent film classic, Les Vampires. Set against the backdrop of a lurid crime thriller, Mira struggles as the distinctions between herself and the character she plays begin to blur and merge. Irma Vep reveals to us the uncertain ground that lies at the border of fiction and reality, artifice and authenticity, art and life.”

Episode 2 is slated to air on June 13, 2022, at 9 pm ET/PT. It will be available to stream on HBO Max simultaneously. We do not anticipate any changes to the schedule, although that is a possibility.
Where to watch Irma Vep online
In the U.S., Irma Vep will air exclusively on HBO and HBO Max. In the U.K., the show will be coming to Sky Atlantic and NowTV, although as with Breeders, the release date hasn’t been confirmed yet.
