Bastard!! Heavy Metal, Dark Fantasy is an adaptation of the popular manga series of the same name, created by Kazushi Hagiwara. This new anime series from Netflix is split into two parts, with the first thirteen episodes debuting in June 2022 and another eleven episodes scheduled for a later release. The show follows an evil wizard called Dark Schneider, who inhabits the body of a boy named Lucien. To summon this sorcerer Yoko must kiss the boy, but Dark Schneider isn’t the most cooperative of allies and wants world domination when released.
The series plays out like a standard anime series, with plenty of violent battle sequences, an abundance of mythological backstory, and an unfortunately large amount of sexual content. The show is rated an eighteen plus for sexual violence and suitable for adults only. I found the show to be quite generic, with some dated, sexist views.

The first thirteen episodes only account for part one of the series, with another eleven episodes due to premiere later in the year. Netflix hasn’t yet announced when the second instalment will be released. But if Ozark or Stranger Things are anything to go by, the gap between releases should be relatively short and it may arrive as early as August or September if I was to hazard a guess. But will they renew the series for season two? As always, it depends on the popularity of the first season.
With there being so much source material, it would seem likely that the writers have enough content to continue into further seasons and if the show is successful then Netflix will happily green light a subsequent season. I doubt there will be much backlash from the more negative aspects of the series and it may have a niche appeal. If I was to predict the likelihood of a renewal, I would say it is more than likely going to be renewed, although Netflix has been cutting animated properties left, right, and center in recent times. The anime department might be next to go.
